Icon5 Security in the parks?

Do they plan on adding extra security this summer due to the press release today? I would think it would hard to "hide" something like that. It's the happiest place on earth and yet it would be hard to be happy when you see a lot of extra security around. It would still make you worry some. Of course, I would want them anyway. Being the "Happiest Place on Earth" would seem like a main target (other than a political one) and being that I am going there (as many others are) this summer, I suppose it is now on my mind. Well, I also live 50 miles South of D.C. too. I emailed Disney, but have not heard back yet. I suspect it will be a few days. I don't want to stir up any controversy or make anyone feel uneasy or anything. I just want to know if anyone heard about increased security. I will defintely still go this summer though. Thanks.

Re: Security in the parks?

I don't think anything will happen in Disney. As someone pointed out on another forum,Disney may be an American symbol, but so many foreigners go there,it wouldn't be an attack exclusively against Americans. At the same time, any security precautions they take will be heartily welcomed by me.

Re: Security in the parks?

Unfortunately, these are the measures that need to be taken and I am glad Disney stays up with it!! It shows they care!!!

This will not keep us from going tho!! That is what they want is for us to live scared!!! And I refuse to be a prisoner in my own country!!

I agree with mickeyaholic I feel this is a destination of many countries and would not tend to be a huge target!!!

Enough said!!! I encourage all the precautions taken as well!!

Re: Security in the parks?

All four Disney parks recently installed expensive anti-terrorist bomb barriers at their service entrances. The yellow-and-black barricades are designed to stop a 20,000-pound truck bomb moving at 70 mph.

Disney also has been testing metal detectors, although WDW President Al Weiss said the company has no plans to put them in permanently. Disney actually is behind the curve when it comes to metal detectors. The security devices are used at all 16 Six Flags amusement parks operated in this country by Six Flags Inc., the nation's biggest park company after Disney. They're also in place at all five parks owned by Paramount Parks Inc., the No. 6 park company based on total attendance.

Some security experts actually have wondered what has taken Disney so long.

"To me, those kinds of things should have happened a long time ago," said David Cid, a former FBI terrorism specialist and now president of a security consulting firm in Edmond, Okla. "I think they are getting bad advice, or they have ignored the good advice."

I agree that I wont live my life a cage, but that doesnt help with that feeling in my stomache and the worry in my heart. Hopefully they will follow through with some the metal detectors. I also think that these should have been put in a long time ago. Saftey measures need to be anywhere that people congregrate.

Re: Security in the parks?

You have a better chance of something happening to you going to the airport than you have having something happening to you in WDW.This is just what the terrorist want to happen. All Americans afraid to travel or go out. That hurts or ecomony and that hurts each and everyone of us. Just be concoius of what going on around yourself at all times and report anything that doesn't look right. Don't stop enjoying your life. It to short as it is.

Re: Security in the parks?

I think they will. I hope I didn't worry anyone..it wasn't my intention. I do not want it to damper my vacation and I am sure it won't. Heck! I am going and having fun!!! It's not been a good year for us (MIL w/ breast cancer, a 14 yo nephew passed away from cancer, my dad died, 2 huge trees fell on our house 3 weeks ago and damaged the house badly, and my DH is being demoted just because they want the $$ to themselves, and so on) so NO threat is keeping me away from our vacation. Besides My DH is looking around for a new job and we might not get one for another year. So at least we'll be happy there! WDW is an American symbol and yes..many foreigners visit, but wouldn't that be the point? To stop foreigners from coming here and supporting American stuff and to cripple our economy even further? Well, I just hope Homeland Security can nip it in the behind before it happens. In the meantime, we should all have a wonderful vacation and not let ANYONE prevent us from having a great time!!!!! Go Disney!!!!!!!

Re: Security in the parks?

I feel that extra security measures are great at places like WDW and DL. I think that these recent threats that were adressed in the press conference today are directed more toward upcoming political events. Amusement and theme parks are some of the safest places you can be. I'm not going to worry about it.

Re: Security in the parks?

may I remind you pbharris4 that Disneyland is "The Happiest place on Earth", not Disney World, BUT Disney world is "Where the Magic begins" and "Where the Magic happens". I just wanted to say that, why? idonno. :-)
