MGM - Details

I was looking around MGM when I noticed something peculiar about the trolley wires: They are hung upside down!

I'm surprised that the Disney Imagineers would do it this way. I know they aren't intended to be real, but they should at least *look* authentic right?

My DD asked me the same question last week when we were there. You're right, they should look real! I wonder who goffed? Interesting. Joe

Re: MGM - Details

Most other people probably wouldn't have known, because they have never seen trolley wires or a trolley and don't know what they are or just aren't that observant. However, our Matt observes everything Disney.

I have to admit that I also find it odd that they hung them upside down unless there was a specific reason (i.e. safety, structure, or architecture) that it was necessary to do it this way and they reasoned that it would probably be alright because the general public would not notice it anyways. I guess they weren't counting on people like Matt.

I have never seen a trolly (except in the movies). So how do you know the wire are upside down?

I have never seen one either, but I would imagine that they have to be under that pole that holds it up. Why are they hung there anyways?? I don't really see how that fits into the theming for that area.

I never would have noticed if you didn't point this out. I guess that is why WDW never fixed this blunder. I guess they figured that 9 out of 10 wouldn't even know what one looks like..lol like me.

As far as how it's upside down, it's the bracket. Streetcars/trolleys have a thin spring-loaded pole on roof that presses against the wire which is where it gets it's electricity. The bracket should be turned the other way, else the trolley's pole would jump off the wire each time it passes a pole.

The reason this is authentic is that downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood used to have street cars instead of the buses that run today. If you look down at the street, you'll notice that the tracks are partially paved over. We have a LOT of that in the Boston area, as well as a handful of areas where we still have trolleys/light rail.
