Is it worth taking my 19 month old son to Disney?

My son is 19 months old, and we are going to Florida in a week and a half. After reading a lot, I don't know how much of it he will enjoy. Do you think it is worth going, and if so, which is better for that age, MK or MGM? Thanks!

I don't think that there's anything outside of MK that he'd really be able to enjoy. MK, especially Mickey's Toon Town? is great for kids of all ages. I know that sounds cliche, but it's really true.

MGM is definately geared towards older kids and Epcot is downright adult. If he were a little older, Animal Kingdom might be ok because it gets awfully crowded and muggy there. But I think he might enjoy the birds on the way in as well as the trails.

I say take him. WDW is such a magical place for kids of all ages. There are so many things for little ones to enjoy, MK is all about kids. Really, there are more rides that he CAN go on than can't. As long as you go knowing that there are going to be some things that you have to miss (for now) you will have a great trip. Stick to his normal schedule as much as you can and take your time so you can soak up the magic. Kids grow up so fast, enjoy this trip with him.

Re: Is it worth taking my 19 month old son to Disney?

I wouldn't recommend anyone going with a child that young if they weren't already going with older kids. He probably wouldn't get much out of it, even at the Magic Kingdom. He might like the Winne the Pooh ride, and then there's Mickey's Toonland, but after that there's not much for him. At that age it's unlikely you'd even be able to spend more than half a day at the park, since if he's like my daughter at that age, he's going to need a nap. Really, I just recommend passing on Disney this trip and something else to do while you're in town.

Re: Is it worth taking my 19 month old son to Disney?

My son was 22 months when we went. When he was 19 months he already new Tigger, Pooh, and Mickey by sight. I think he would enjoy it! Dumbo is always a hit in MK. Playhouse Disney is Fantistic for young kids in MGM. He would also like some of the things in Animal Kingdom if he likes animals. Alot will depend on where he is as a 19 month old. If he can hold his own, and reconizes characters from TV, he should be fine. At 19 months, my son was on rides at all of our amusement parks here, and he enjoyed it. We used that as a gage of how he might enjoy Disney. Hope this helps. I definately reccomend either buying him a seat on the plane, (if you are flying), or pray that there is an open seat. Our son didn't take well to sitting on our laps all through the flight.

Re: Is it worth taking my 19 month old son to Disney?

I would definitely take him to MK. He will absolutely love it! A tip though, dont force him to go near the characters. Toddlers seem to either love them at first or are scared to death of them. My ds loved them from far away but up close...forget it. That changed though once he turned 2 yrs old. At 18 months they are so in awe of everything. He will love the parades. We were even able to bring ds in the Haunted House and on Pirates of the Caribbean at that age. But now, at 2.5 yrs old, the Haunted House is out..lol

As for MGM, there really isnt enough there for him for an entire day <in my opinion> If he is a big Playhouse Disney fan then he will love the Playhouse Disney show though.

Dont forget your camera...you dont want to miss capturing the look on his face the first time he sees the castle or better yet...MICKEY!

Re: Is it worth taking my 19 month old son to Disney?

If you aren't going to be able to take another trip to WDW for a while after this visit because of cost, I would wait until he is older--there is so much more he will be able to do. That being said, children of any age can have a good time at any of the parks (Epcot would be a stretch though--on one of my visits, my son was 2--we skipped Epcot completely). Just remember that you'll have to take a slower pace (not see every attraction) and a mid-day nap break is pretty much essential. If you go with another adult, you could "switch off" on some of the rides you might not want to miss--gotta have your fun too!

Disneyland: 1975, 1980, 1985, 1988
WDW: 1995 (WL), 1996 (Off-site condo), 2002 (SOG), 2003 (Contemporary)
Looking forward every day!!!! Disneyland--June 2005 (for my daughter's 8th birthday!), DCL--Dec. 2005, WDW--May 2006.

Re: Is it worth taking my 19 month old son to Disney?

YES!! We took my daughter for the first time when she was 20 months old and when she met Mickey for the first time, it was just priceless. I still tear up every time we watch the video. We also went when my son was 19 months old and he had lots of fun, but wasn't too thrilled about staying in his stroller a lot. He went on pretty much all the rides he could on our lap - obvious ones excluded. He actually loved Pirates at that age (still does) and we rode it and Buzz over and over. We also took my third child when he was turning one and it was just as magical. I've found that at every age level we've gone with the children - there is something for each of them and I've cherished each trip.
