Overweight on Disney Rides

Calling all you experts with good memory. A family friend is going with us to spend a day at MK and perhaps another at Epcot and/or MGM. She is overweight and is concerned about riding rides. She is not into anything thrilling. I am just hoping she will go on some rides with my 5yr old. I cannot remember what rides have bars that have to go down and what ones are just seats. Also what is roomy and what is not.

I am basically talking about Buzz Lightyear, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Jungle Cruise, Pirates, Philharmagic at MK. I cannot think for sure at MGM - great movie ride?

She 50 yrs old and may be 250? Gosh, that may be high 230? It's hard to know. I really would not have thought about her having any problems until it was mentioned to me that she was worried. It seems like when we were there this summer there were some her size I saw in line for rides.

Oh, and one more thing. Do you know what of the above rides has an easy way to bypass the ride if she gets to the front and does not want to ride at the last minute?

Thanks for any advice -she is worried about the airline seat also : (

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

Allears has a page devoted to large sized people, called Disney At Large. It describes what rides are tight fits and which ones offer no problems. They even have photos of all the cars from the different rides and attractions.

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

Buzz Lightyear
Winnie the Pooh
Peter Pan
Jungle Cruise
Pirates
Philharmagic
great movie ride?

All of these (except pirates can be easiliy exited, IMO)
I truley believe that there will be no problems. These laps bars do not crush down on you, but rather lower down to suggest you should not get out. Pirates has no bars (only in the jail scene), nor the Jungle Cruise or Philharmagic (with decent sized seats).
Even the riges not mentioned, like TOT or RNRC are still managable. The only rides I ever feel very uncomfy on are at Universal's High thrill coasters, where you are strapped in for Life or Death.

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

I was about that size last year (I'm a tad smaller now, yea!!!) and all of those rides gave me no trouble. I usually do not go on any fast rides, but I went on the ride at AK, I think it's the dinosaur ride. I hated it, but I fit. The same with test track, hated ,but fit. What can I say, I'm a true chicken. In winnie the pooh I took the front seat and my husband took the back, same with snow white, also space ship earth. But in buzz and peter pan we had no trouble sitting side by side, and my husband is a big guy, also getting smaller. ( we were worried going on peterpan, that we would break the ride and crash in the London skyline, but as far as I know it's still there)

What an honest thread we are ALL participating in.
to all.
I once went on Grizzly Rapids out in Disneyland (similar to Kali River) and they put me on the raft all by my self, I though it would go into a tumble, but all went fine Den

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

I was that size two years ago, but now I am down 70 pounds. The only thing that gave me trouble were the turnstiles expecially Pirates. I had to go under the part they had roped off. I am short so for a taller person this might not be a problem. I am happy to say that just being back from the World. I had no problems at all.

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

Pete is 6'1 and about 255lbs. He went on Mission: Space with no problem (you can see from my avatar how big he is) and there was nothing he was uncomfortable on except Alice's Teacups, and he almost barfed up his mickey pop. lol.

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

Thank you so much for this post....this is something I had not even thought of, but is a concern for my DH and he hadn't mentioned it. Thanks again for all the great info, he's more relaxed now!

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

About the airline seats, I know they sometimes take the little belt used for the "how to fasten your seatbelt" demonstration and use it for an extender on the regular seatbelt, so she should have no problem on the airplane as well! I think she is in for a super vacation, and you are great to look into the issue for her! As far as the rides, I think most of the tamer rides have little or no restraints. If she would liek to try a water/rollercoaster ride, just go over to Maelstrom, as it has no restraints whatsoever. And of the big thrill rides, Space Mountain has the tightest quarters...

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

I am around that weight and I had no problems on any ride in Disney, and we did alot of them, including the fast ones. The biggest problem was the turnstiles. As far as the airplane, not a problem. I am 5'5" that could also be an issue if someone is shorter.

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

I was very glad to see this thread. My sister is overweight and has trouble riding some of the roller coasters at Six Flags. She will be joining us on our next vacation to Disney and she has expressed concern several times that she will be wasting her money because she won't be able to ride the rides. I told her that I thought it wouldn't be a problem, so I am glad to read that others have ridden the rides without trouble. I will definitely call her tonight and let her know!

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

Six Flags is definately more of a hassle! There rides are always a tight fit and uncomfortable!

Re: Overweight on Disney Rides

I'm 5'2" and about 222. I only have trouble with the turnstile at Pirates. I take my time getting in/out of TestTrack & Space Mountain. Other than those inconveniences...I ride everything including the Barn Stormer in Toon Town and RockNRoller Coaster.
