Space Mountain

I have not been to the World in years and can't remember how intense Space Mountain is....so, I was hopeful that you all could tell me if my DD (almost 5) will enjoy it. She is a dare devil and hopefully will be the full 44 inches by Feb. She is lacking about 1/4 of an inch now!!! Is this ride too much for a little one? She cried at the county fair this year when they wouldn't let her on the upside down ride...lol!!! But, truth being told she has never actually been on a somewhat scary ride.

Thanks!!!!

Re: Space Mountain

I think this ride is mostly scary because of the darkness. It really is pretty much a run of the mill big rollercoaster but because it is dark you can't tell when you are being turned from side to side. My 5 year old went on it twice, but she loves the Rock N'Roller coaster at MGM, which goes upside down and in corkscrews.

Re: Space Mountain

The other issue with this coaster is that you basicly sit by yourself, yes Mom or Dad can sit behind, but while you are bopping around the track the feeling is one of being by yourself. My DD loved it for just that reason. The other thing is it is not the smoothest ride you have ever been on, a bit like some of the older coasters at the different amusement parks. Still all in all it ranks up there as one of my favorites.

Re: Space Mountain

You could also take her on the Transit Authority ride first. It goes through SM and she can see the cars moving and how dark it is.

I am a roller coaster "No Way" person and laughed my butt off the first time I went on. Same with RNR, which is one of my fav rides.

hiner I agree .. taking her on the TTA would be a perfect way for her to decide.
I dont believe SM is as intense as R&RC ... but I do believe the ride last just a little bit longer.. Also ..there is Goofy's barnstormer .. a short but very fun coaster ride in ToonTown Fair, you could try that ..then walk around the back side walk to SM

Oooh, forgot about Goofy's Barnstormer. That's a good one to try and then go on TTA for her to see what SM is all about.

Re: Space Mountain

You could also try Big Thunder Mountain, where you can sit beside her. That was MY first roller coaster, and it got me over my fear of roller coasters.

Re: Space Mountain

My DS (now 6) loves all the coasters, Thunder Mountain he loves (except the loud bats in the begining). Also love TOT!!! But he has not been on SM yet, mainly due to the seating arrangement, but his little friend went on it, and she loved and now he wants to. I think RNRC is more powerful, more intense but smoother and faster (except the back row's) and you sit 2 in a seat with shoulder harnesses.

As much as he and we love all the "biggies" he also love Goofy's Barn Stormin.

Re: Space Mountain

My DD was 5 when she first rode and was scared. She loves the other coasters, but I think she has a problem with Space Mountain because it's in the dark. I agree with what everyone else is saying by taking her on TTA first.
My DD was just under the height requirement the first time she rode. Thick soled shoes make a big difference.

Re: Space Mountain

Barnstormer is great. Our oldest DS went with us to WDW for the first time last year and of course he had to ride EVERYTHING. Only problem, he is 6'3" and really had to squeeze to get into the car. One of those rare times I did not have a camera with me, too bad as it was about as funny of a picture as you could imagine.

Re: Space Mountain

It's almost a shame there isn't a Matterhorn at WDW, that might be a good warm up, with similar cars. Either Primevil Whirl or Big Thunder would be a good warm up, and Goofy's Barnstormer is also a good, if tame, warm up. You could take her into the queue and try to keep her in line and let her change her mind at the last second. Who knows, once she gets that far in, and sees all the happy fearless people getting on, she might be ok. But what do I know? I ride Millenium Force without holding on.

Re: Space Mountain

I tried to get my 6yr DD on but she wouldnt go! I had to go on by myself!
I dragged her on TM and she didn't like it.
My DD is not a daredevil and hates fast rides and coasters where her stomach drops. I told her TM was a baby rollercoaster and she still didn't like it. I tell her other kids her size goes on and that still doesnt change her mind.
Maybe you will have better luck!

After going on I knew she woulda hated it, and also like someone else said you sit along so you can't hold their hand or put your arm around them.

Re: Space Mountain

My DS was a daredevil from day one. I remember running all over town when he was four to try and find sneakers with the thickest soles so he would make that last height requirement!! He also learned very early how to stand really straight and pull his neck out so he would look taller! And then there is my almost 14 year old DD who STILL has not ridden Space Mountain, and I don't think EVER will! What I'm trying to say is, everyone is different, and they really don't know if they'll like it until they try!

Re: Space Mountain

I hope my DD changes one day but it's ok if she don't either. Iam a ride/coaster nut and would love for her to ride with me one day.
I also tell her all the time to try things again, what she didnt like or was afraid of last year, she may like now, seeing she is a whole year older, people/things change.
I keep praying and my fingers are crossed!
