Great new attraction debuts at Living Seas

DW and I went to the opening of Turtle Talk with Crush on Tuesday at the Living Seas in Epcot and came away totally impressed. The attraction is part of what Disney is calling the overlay of the Living Seas with a themed emphasis on Finding Nemo. The project has been going on for months, but Tuesday was the debut of Turtle Talk.

Turtle Talk with Crush is a truly enjoyable attraction in which an animated Crush, the surfer-dude turtle from Nemo, actually interacts with the live audience seated in front of a large screen. The animated scene depicts Crush under water as he swims and spins and cavorts while answering questions from the audience -- particularly questions from children, who are encouraged to sit on the floor at the front of the theater. A Cast Member in the theater serves as your host. He has a microphone and circulates among the children so their questions can be heard.

We were really awed by the technology that somehow allows Crush to interact with the audience. This is no push-the-button-and-run-the-film attraction. Crush actually "sees" people in the audience and picks them out, and his animation coincides perfectly with what he's saying.

The attraction, which opened in tandem with an interactive shark education area featuring Bruce, another Nemo character, has gotten virtually no publicity. In our opinion, though, it's much more fun than the ballyhooed new Stitch attraction.

The Living Seas has languished for a long time, but there's finally something there that makes the trip worthwhile. Kids will love it, and so will adults. Totally awesome, Dude!

Re: Great new attraction debuts at Living Seas

This sounds great! I always liked the Living Seas - I was so disappointed when they took out the ride at the beginning, lol. But I'm glad to see they're putting more stuff in. Thanks for posting about this, Park Hopper, I had no idea they were going Finding Nemo. I'll definitely try this next trip.

Re: Great new attraction debuts at Living Seas

I'm SOOOOO happy about this!!!

Many of you have heard me complain quite vocally about the Living Seas many times and I am THRILLED to death that they're trying to focus on improving it.

I'm not going to tell my family about this. I'm going to find a way to convince them to give it "one last shot" and hopefully, they'll be pleasantly surprised.

Park Hopper, is it really informative? Can you ask him things like how old a giant clam would live, or how deep the Pacific Ocean is?

Re: Great new attraction debuts at Living Seas

We are all big Nemo fans here so we are excited to see what they've done since last year. Little DS is a huge Crush fan..he is always going up to people saying "gimme fin, gimme noggin(clanking his head on theirs) and then says "duuuude"..it is too cute. He got very excited when I told him Crush was at Epcot and we'd see him in 30 days.

Re: Great new attraction debuts at Living Seas

This is great! I've always been impressed by the concept and magnitude of The Lving Sea. Unfortunately, I have the attention span of a gnat, and just have never been able to focus enough to get much enjoyment out of it. But now, with the prospect of animated characters to keep me entertained (how pitiful is that for an adult to admit to) maybe I can give this attraction the attention it so richly deserves.

Matt, there aren't any restrictions on the questions you can ask Crush. The depth of marine life knowledge possessed by the person actually answering the questions may be another matter. The questions asked by the kids when I was there were pretty basic. Knowing Disney, though, I would think the actor/actors portraying Crush would be well-schooled. I was pretty impressed with the improvisational talents of the person doing the Crush voice. Kids, as the saying goes, can ask the darndest questions, but Crush handled everything -- even a couple of times when a child got a little stagestruck -- quite smoothly.

Wow! Just when I was growing skeptical of "Imagineering." Stitch sounds like such a bust, but this sounds great!
