Remember to always be pleasant to a CM when approached at the Kingdom... especially out in Main Street around the Castle. They are the ones who handpick you to spend the night in the Castle. We witnessed this in Sept. 08 , They asked a family standing next to us. (The one time to be a couple of feet away in the wrong direction!!!!)

They do it on the mornings when there is no EMH at the kingdom. It starts just before 9am

During Christmas, we were on Main Street right next to the big clock about 3to midnight . . . the theme song from Cinderella started to play, and then the clock chimed 12! It was really cool! We felt like we were in the Cinderella movie!

Don't know if it makes any difference at all, but I will say that we had planned to take photos that day, so I had dressed the kids in cute clothes and DD had a bow in her hair.

I just went to my WDW mementos stash and looked at all the loot from that day. NICE!

I would LOVE to see the pics or scanned images you have. We have seen the park close on many occasions, and have done the rope drop, but it was only when DW and I went without the kids that we actually saw MK open. We'd been to AK for open before, but they don't (didn't at the time anyways) do anything special. I think the entrance to MK provides the perfect way to put on a show before they open.

Definitely make the effort to see the Opening at MK...it's a great way to start your Magical Day!
