Disney To Offer Innovative New Baggage Service!!!

DISNEY IS NOW GOING TO OFFER TRANSPORTATION TO/AND FROM MCO!!!!!!!! AND THATS NOT ALL!!!!!! There are so many perks to this new program let me give you the full rundown on how the new program works, and then I will share more of my excitement. (BTW: This program begins May 5th, 2005 and must be booked with WDW a minimum of 10 days in advance of your trip.)

Here is how it goes!!!:
1) Arrive at the airport for your flight to WDW!!! You check your bags with the airline. You get on your plane.
2) You arrive in MCO, and you simply go to the special WDW transportation area. Disney has partnered with MEARS ( ), but has purchased all new state of the art coach busses to transport guest to their resort. Your baggage is transfered from your airline to WDW's possesion, and then they magically make it appear in your room, all in Disney fashion.
3) Check-In at your resort like you normally would.
4) Enjoy your WDW vacation!!!
5) OK its your day of check-out, and you go to check-out of your room. When you go to check-out of your room there will also be airline check-in desks AT YOUR RESORT!!! At these desks you will be able to check-in for your flight, and check your bags. At this time you will also be given your boarding passes.
6) Go through security checkpoints, and board your plane. IT'S THAT EASY!!

OK I am exuberant about this new program, but I do see MANY flaws in the program that I would like to point out.
1) They have to integrate systems with the airlines so that when your bags arrive at MCO they know that your bag gets transfered to your resort. Does this mean your plane tickets will have to be tied in with your resort reservation??
2) OK while I love the thought of WDW making my bags magically appear in my room, but can you imagine if Disney lost a bag. It would be a huge blame game between WDW, and the airlines. Some sort of UPS style porgram will have to be implemented, where the bag gets scanned at multiple spots between the airlport and your resort.
3) Airlines desks at the resort!!?? It sounds great, but where are they going to put this. I know PC doesn't have any room in its lobby for more desks, so where does that put all this??

The more, and more I think about this it sounds like it is going to be one huge mess for WDW.

Re: Disney To Offer Innovative New Baggage Service!!!

This is a pretty cool system, esp. if it works and gets you out of security nightmare at the airport.

MCO and WDW could be testing a new RFid tagging system.

Thinking about the system I would guess that WDW has worked something out with MCO's baggage handling system. They tag RFid's to your bags at your original checkin that get caught by MCO's BHS for distribution to WDW and WDW uses the original tag or retag them which MCO's BHS reads as returning airline info.

(RFid is radio frequency identification. They are little tags that when energized by a reader give up a code or other information that is tied to a database. Wal-mart is pushing for all their vendors to start using them. They will eventually replace bar codes. There are some cool ideas...when a customer takes the nth number of an item off the shelf it triggers a reorder request, and scary ideas stores know what type of buyer you are by the tags in your clothes. Every Disney DVD I have bought in the past 6 months have had one in the packaging)

I forgot to mention the partnering airlines list. The current partners are: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Song, United Airlines and Ted. Disney hopes to add more airlines to the list in the near future. I have a feeling that: US Airways, Southwest, and JetBlue will top their list to add to the program.

I am so glad to hear this is going to be available. I answered a survey after my trip in Dec 03 about this but hadn't heard anything more about it. From the survey, I thought they would send a Disney tag to put on your luggage for easier id. I will be eager to hear when someone tries it out.

Yes, it does sound like it is on a trial basis, but I don't think they would setup so many permanent things. I mean they bought a lot of coach busses for gosh sakes. I guess they could be transferred or sold if it didn't work out.

Re: Disney To Offer Innovative New Baggage Service!!!

This service is already in place at some Orlando area hotels and never has too many major problems. The WDW cast was assured by Al Weiss today that they program is ready to be rolled out in honor of the "Happiest Celebration on Earth". Details are still quite shady but as a resort cast member I'm very excited about the new service. I wish I knew more details but quite frankly they didn't really tell too much information.

I wonder if this will put firms like Quicksilver and Tiffany Towncar out of business?

Also,I hope that it will cost people using it extra, because I will never need this service so I don't want to have to pay for it in increased hotel room rates.

Re: Disney To Offer Innovative New Baggage Service!!!

From the survey I took, they indicated the cost would be about the same as the Mears is now. Although at the time I took the survey, it sounded like a great idea, I am not sure I would use it unless there were only one or two of us in my party and staying for just 2-3 days. I took the survey before I had experienced Quicksilver and that wonderful grocery stop they provide.

The survey I took asked something like "Would you be willing to pay a little extra to...." So I'm hopeful the cost will not be passed to non-flying guests.

Re: Disney To Offer Innovative New Baggage Service!!!

I would pay a little extra if I didn't have to chase my bags and it meant more buses ran to WDW (key word is little).

Re: Disney To Offer Innovative New Baggage Service!!!

This sounds like a good service, but then again I am one of those ones who likes to actually see my luggage after a flight, just a sense of security to know it got there too
