pressed coins

I've asked this question in another thread but it seems to keep getting jumped over. I know you chit-chatters will know the answer 'cuz you guys know everything. Well almost everything. Well, a lot. Anyway, what the heck are the pressed coins that people make reference to for souvenirs?????

Re: pressed coins

There are presses coin machines all over WDW. You put in a quarter and a penny and pick a design you want on the penny. The machine flattens out the penny and imprints a design on the front of it. Some gift shops sell a pressed penny holder for about five bucks to hold your collection. It fun seeking out all the different designs. You can find them in all kinds of places in every park.

Re: pressed coins

Hey Smee, I was going to answer that in the other thread, but someone had already posted about it.

I think pressed pennies are a waste of money UNLESS you going for a collection.

Re: pressed coins

Like Dana said, the machines are all over the place. My son, 6, has a blast collecting them. He filled his first book last summer and I am sure he will start filling another one this summer.

Re: pressed coins

You can also get pressed quarters. I forgot to mention that. I ws trying to avoid doing them and when I bought my DD's pressed penny book she aksed the CM what the big slots were for and I got sucked right in. I read a suggestion on this board before that works great. Bring one of those M&M mini tubes filled with pennies and quarters to use on the machines. Try to use really shiney pennies too. The design turns out much more clear although you can see it on any penny....just better on the shiney ones. My DD has about 5 or six slots left to complete her collection. We only got two last trip. We forgot all about it until we had been there for a few days.

Re: pressed coins

I love the M&M tubes for the change. Tip--don't fill the tube too full--I made that mistake ONCE. I had to dump half the the change out in the room, it felt like I was hauling a brick around by the end of the day.

Re: pressed coins

My 3 year old niece has been carrying around a purse since she started to walk (around 13 or 14 months). She has a car keys (couple old keys on a ring), cell phone (one of those toy ones), and a fist full of pressed pennies from Disney.

She is very fun with how she has to have it when she leaves the house and has never lost it or anything in it.

My sister tell me occasionally she tries to pay for stuff with the pressed pennies

She is such a girl...makes my DW happy.

For my nieces birthday I'm sending her a new purse (from DtD) with more pressed pennies!

Re: pressed coins

Two tips for the pressed pennies:

(1) make sure to bring a roll of nice, clean shiny pennies to use! When you use dirty ones, they look...icky.

(2) The little pressed penny "books" that Dana and DisneyTeacher made references to are a lifesaver! The pennies slip into tight little plastic pockets, and you can open it up and look at them all at once. I tried saving the pennies in my fanny pack, and ended up losing a bunch whenever I pulled out money or my camera.

Re: pressed coins

My DS loves these, but I cringe everytime I think of paying 51 cents for a flat penny. At least with an $8 pin he can trade it, collect it or whatever.

Wait a minute I am out $7.49 on this deal. Maybe the pennies aren't so bad afterall.

Haha. Yeah, while DH and I are pin fanatics now...we couldn't justify the expense of pins on our first trip to DLR, so we each picked out a few pressed pennies. It was worth it. We were on an ultra-budget trip, but we still have the pennies to remind us of it!
