Fearing hurricane season and bad weather
So now that I am realizing that "value" season seems to coincide with hurricane season (geez, I should have realized that weeks ago!), I was wondering if anyone has been stuck in a disney resort during really bad weather? What is there to do?
DH, DD (1 1/2) and I are staying at POR in September and I am truly hoping that there is atleast no rain...I won't even wish for sun! Am I just paranoid?

I believe Tink was there during the hurricanes. Look up her trip report and see.
Disney probably faired the best out of Central Fl, lol. They had power when I didn't, and I wasn't even in the "bad" zone...

I would like to live in the hurricane zone like both of you do! I don't like hurricanes, but I love Florida!

Re: Fearing hurricane season and bad weather
When the hurricanes came last time the parks were closed for one day and Disney kept everyone inside of the resorts. They begin airing movies on the Resort channels, they bring characters in to the lobby, and they also bring extra food into the lobby. That would be one of those times staying at the Moderate or Deluxe pays off because atleast you have a sitdown onsite.

Re: Fearing hurricane season and bad weather
I was there last year during Jeanne. It wasn't bad. We had to all stay in our rooms with our bag lunches and flashlights. The parks were closed early and for the whole next day. The pool at the Poly was super gross after, because the lake and it became one during the storm...we didn't get to use it for the rest of our stay(not that we wanted to with it gross and all). But.......they had great games for kids and characters in the lobby when it was safe for us to go out. The castmembers were so great the whole time, and I know most of them were there more then 24 hours. We never lost power, allthough it was a bit scary being on the 3rd floor and seeing all the decapitating palm trees near us. I could also see minor damage to the GF roof from our room which made me wonder what our roof looked like. I was one of thoes nuts who had to go out on the balcony during the storm just to see what was going on. All in all it wasn't so bad. We have booked for about the same time this year. Just keep in mind that it is soooo rare for the storms to get that far inland.... I think last year was an odd one!

Re: Fearing hurricane season and bad weather
We have been there for a few pretty bad storms but never a hurricane. The CM's really seem to be at their best though when those times arise. From watching the Weather Channel they are predicting this season to be worse than last year and for more to hit the US coast and they seem to be pretty good at those predictions. Now only if we could get the Weather Service to predict our local weather better.

Re: Fearing hurricane season and bad weather
As long as the hurricane is a Category 1, 2, or a small 3, you really don't have much to worry about, and Disney would be fine. Once it gets to a stronger 3 and higher, I'd get the heck outta Dodge and vacation in another state.
You don't want to be anywhere near a second serving of Andrew.

Re: Fearing hurricane season and bad weather
It will rain while you are there. It will. There is nothing you can do about it. Take advantage. A lot of people leave the parks when it starts to rain, and if you stick around(buy your ponchos) when the rain stops the park will be close to empty and it will feel like you have it all to yourself. It's great!!! As far as the hurricanes, we Floridians are hoping that none hit as well. I was in the path of Frances and Jeanne last year and I am not looking forward to going through that again. My Apt. complex is still not fixed! However, they have said it is going to be a very active season. Keep your fingers crossed that it is active only in the ocean!!!!!! I am=)

Re: Fearing hurricane season and bad weather
yeah, keep in mind that they usually say a hurricane season will be "above normal" - that doesn't mean that they are going to hit Fl.
Even though we stick out like a sore thumb down here, we normally don't get very many hurricanes. Don't the Carolinas get more than us?

Re: Fearing hurricane season and bad weather
I'm already getting geared up for the storms. I took them on last year and won. Bring em on! Anyhoo, if for some odd reason you're here when one hits and your "stranded" at your resort, don't worry! After all, we're Disney, and guest service and satisfaction is what we're here to give. We even bring the characters to YOU during the storms! So you'll get a good experience one way or another.
