The Virginia Project
Recall that back in the Early 90's Disney wanted to make a theme park that was going to be in Virginia? I know it wasn't going to be another Magic Kingdom. But what was going to be in the park. I'm sure it has something to do with American History.

Re: The Virginia Project
It was all about American history, Civil war etc. They even had a name.which I can't recall. I think the residents of Virginia kept that park from happening more than Disney just backed out. I would be interested to hear details as well.
I know there are writings about it. You may wanna Google it.

Re: The Virginia Project
Disney's America I think was the name. Yes, the towns people voted against it, although Virginia as a whole was for it. They feared another Orlando.... whatever.
Another area gathered up the land and proposed an offer to Disney later on, but for whatever reason the park was all but dead on the water and nothing ever went furthur. There are some great articles out there discussing the park in general and more details about why the park never came to be. This was Eisners brainchild and could have been a huge strike in his favor if the park had ever came to be, as long as it was not on the cheap like DCA started out.

Re: The Virginia Project
Another reason the residents were against it was the fact that it was located less than a few miles from a Civil War Battleground.
And think about it.... Its not really a good idea. They would have had to close the park for the winter etc. It would not be like their parks in Florida or California. The weather is just not conducive. A fun fact: This was one of Michael Eisner's big projects and was the beging of his downfall.

Re: The Virginia Project
I lived in Northern VA when this was going on. It was going to be out in Manassas and I remember some of the folks that live out there were actually split. The long-time residents were actually for it, but there were so many new developments with new money, that it was quashed.
King's Dominion, while much further East, gets about the same weather that this park would have had and it's only open about 7 months out of the year (if that). This would have gone against the Disney model which is really a year-round resort.

Don't forget though, Disneyland has not been a year round park for that many years. Although, all others after have been.
