Update on British Girl

Came across this update on the British girl that passed out after riding ToT on the Orlando Sentinel's Website.

Quote:
The British teen who collapsed after a Walt Disney World ride last month was flown by air ambulance back to Great Britain on Saturday, still in critical condition.

Leanne Deacon, 16, suffered cardiac arrest July 16 after she rode the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Walt Disney World.

She has remained in critical condition at Florida Hospital Orlando since then.

Hospital spokeswoman Carrie Lockwood said doctors and Leanne's family jointly decided to move the teen.

"The family wanted to get back to Great Britain. There was nothing more that we could have done for her here that could not be done there," Lockwood said.

She flew out of Orlando Executive Airport on Galaxy Air to Montreal, where she was expected to continue on to Great Britain.
Sad to see that she is still in critical condition, but atleast she will be home surrounded by friends and family.

Re: Update on British Girl

Yeah, I heard she was in critical condition, after they did the report on the typhoon lagoon girl.
It's sad what happened, and I don't wish that it happens to any one, but come on, quit giving disney a bad rap. The travel industry has had enough troubles since 9/11. Now all these things that are going on, people not being responsible about thier own health and well being, and thier children's. It's not helping anything. Except make the lines shorter. And the media always has a way of making it seem like it was some how disney's fault.
Although Kari has her advice... "well no one ever got hurt on the wheel of motion ride, now they try to put in these "thrill" rides, and people are getting hurt. Disney should go back to what they originally had, and not all these stupid thrill rides. That's what you go to bush gardens for, or universal studios. Disney isn't about thrill rides, and never should have been."

That's so sad that she's still in critical condition. I'm glad she's able to go back home and be surrounded by family though. My prayers go out to her and her family!!

I was hoping for better news by now. Anybody hear why she went into cardiac arrest?

I wonder if her condition is permanant (like Terry Schiavo - didn't she go into cardiac arrest?) or if she's going to come out of this.

Poor girl - it's awful.

That's a pretty harsh statement. How do you know these parents were being irresponsible?

I think in situations like this our thoughts should be for the families of these children - not how Disney is going to look. There are many, many ailments that are completely undetectible - aneurysm, heart murmurs, to name a couple. It has nothing whatsoever to do with people not being responsible for their and their children's health. What it is, sadly, is life.

I am glad that they were able to fly that little girl home. At least she and her family will have the comfort of home and family.

Re: Update on British Girl

I have to wonder if people just go at Disney way to hard. I'm sure for a lot of them, it's a trip of a lifetime and is also very expensive. So they go from dawn until way past dusk. And add the heat and humidity of central Florida in the summer and it can be a dangerous combination.

What type of poopy is this? "well no one ever got hurt on the wheel of motion ride" First of all, it was called WORLD of Motion, Brainiac. Secondly, how could anyone know this? Inconceivable!!! Unless you are a major high-up at WDW and have access to ultra confidental records, no-one could know for a fact that in the entire run of an attraction that no one has never ever gotten hurt. Just because something dosent make it to the news and internet and newspapers dosent mean it dosent happen. Disney is very tight lipped about what happens pertaintaining to accidents. I'm not sure who this Kari person is, but that is a very narrow minded view to have, I think.

Re: Update on British Girl

It is very sad. This could have happend to any family going to disney including your family and mine. No one could ever predict this and if they could I am sure they wouldn't have went. I have been on TOT and so have lots of others. There had to be more to the story (health wise) than anyone knew. We don't need to point fingers. We need to pray for the family and disney. I am sure Walt would have never wanted anyone getting a scrap on them let-alone have a heart attack or die at his parks. I don't think the trill rides are a hugh problem. Space mountain has been around for what seems like forever and people love it.
The heat is more than what most are up for and I can say first hand that you do push yourself past the point that you should. You need to keep drinking water (they should make it super cheap for people on a budget so that any one could get water anytime) and you need to take breaks indoors if you can. We went from morning to late night and got up the next morning and did it again and again and again. It is hard on the body but millions do it anyway. Sorry to say that out of that many people a story like this pops up from time to time.
We don't always here what goes on at Disney:
Just like the morning we were going into AK. There was an employee on the ground having seizers with what looked like blood coming out of her mouth. Was this Disney's falt? I don't think so! Was it the girls falt? No. I just said a prayer for her as others tried to help her.
The same day we went to AK we also saw a Disney bus that had wrecked in the median and everyone was out of the bus on the grass.
I guess my LONG point is that we can't point fingers. Things happen and it isn't for us to predict or figure out. Some things you can't place blame on. Just pray for them!

Re: Update on British Girl

I agree, most parents would not take their child on a ride knowing that they may end up sick, injured or worse. I have never stepped on a ride thinking, "gee I hope I don't have a heart attack" or "little frankie may die on this ride". I believe we are all in good health, but if something like this happened I would hope that people would not think that I deliberately took my child on a ride knowing that something terrible may happen. OH, and I hope everything turns out well for this poor family, my heart just goes out to them, I can't even begin to imagine what they must be feeling right now.

Re: Update on British Girl

DarthTortoise - Well first of all, Kari is my room-mate, and she doesnt visit these boards, she doesn't have time to. I just don't understand the whole DD, DH, DS and wierd initials like that, I just prefer to spell things out. Short hand is very annoying to read. If it's that important I guess I could put DG for her... but doesn't make much sense to me.
Secondly, I never went on the World of Motion ride, because I never went to Epcot until a couple years ago with Kari and her family, after the ride had closed down. The only time I ever was at Epcot before that was in 1995 on my 5th grade end of the year school field trip, and because I pretty much hated every one in my class and didn't want to be in the group I was in, I don't remember much about it, but the Geosphere, and that's mainly from pictures of it.
Thirdly, all you have to do is go to snopes.com to get the truth about "deaths at Disney". Most of the deaths at disney were from thier own stupid fault, like trying to swim across at Tom Sawyer Island during Grad Nite. Plus the one accidental death at Carousel of Progress was half the rides fault, half the attendant's fault. But in any case, they took precautions to avoid this problem again. There are now sensors and if anything is in the way, the ride stops.
llama - Aneurysm and heart murmurs can be detected. I know this because Kari's father had an aneurysm, and plus without the blinding headache, you die within two hours of having one, if you don't get medical treatment.
There's always a sign of something, it's whether the person takes action for it. I didn't think anything of it, when I started to feel light headed and weak when standing in line at Subway and ended up passing out and having a seizure because I thought it was from being hungry (plus there were about three people ahead of me, and I was just waiting to pay, so I didn't want to get out of line). I've passed a couple more times, and occasionally will get weak and light headed, but I sit down and eat something before I do pass out.
I live in south Florida, I deal with this heat day in and day out, and do things occasionally more active than I would at Disney. I was in the Colorguard during my freshman year of high school, that alone is very very demanding. Not to mention Band Camp the week before school starts (In the middle of August). You spend all morning stretching, excersizing, and a little bit of marching practice. The afternoon, band goes into the band room and practice thier music, we go into the auditorium and pratice our drill. Then in the afternoon we go back outside to practice marching all together. If you've never done it, then you don't realize it's **** on earth. They should name it Boot Camp.
On another note, I don't know if your news reported it or not, but ours told us that the girl had gone on several times in a row and was sitting outside of the ride when it happened. I don't think my stomach, let alone my heart could handle going on ToT more than twice in a row. People just don't take sensable precautions. And teens, more than anything think they're invinsable, nothing will ever hurt them. Add in a little Disney... and then nothing in the world could ever hurt them there.
I know this first hand, I'm only 21 now. And I can recall doing very very stupid things after I first started driving. Now I don't do those things anymore. I've grown up a lot, and plus I dont have a death wish anymore.

I have been on that site, and it makes for some interesting reading, however my point was that we as the general public, or even the all knowing internet, dont always have all of the information, especially regarding accidents at WDW, weather they be due to machine error, operator failure, or even some dum-dum making stupid choices. I know people who have worked at WDW and believe me, their is a lot that happens that we dont ever hear about. I'm not trying to be mean, but your roomates statement seemed very close minded to me.

I think its silly to believe just because you havent heard about any accidents on any given ride, that means that their has never been one. That may or may not be what she ment, but thats how I took it. Just my opinion.
