How scary are they really?
Hi everyone,
Usually I'm not a chicken, and I will pretty much go on any ride. But for some reason, I am really nervous about trying Tower of Terror and Rockin' Roller Coaster. I think its because I've never been on either (haven't been to MGM in so long!) I'd like to try them both while I am there, and was just wondering if anyone can tell me what each is like? In terms of comparisons to anything else, how fast, how steep the drops are, etc? Really anything about the rides that will help me visualize. Maybe if I know a little bit more about them I won't be so scared :-) I know, it sounds so silly... |

If you like roller coasters you'll love RnR -- it's not jerky at all, no huge drops, just REALLY REALLY fast!
As for ToT, I'll have to tell you after Labor Day...that will be the first trip I've had the nerve (and no chicken DH holding me back)! edit...just noticed you'll be there before me... :) Try it and let us know what you think!

Do you like thrill rides? I love both RnRc and ToT. Go for it, we try everything once, if you like it go back if not at least you will know.

Re: How scary are they really?
The cool thing about RNRC is that while it goes upside down, everything is dark, so you really don't know you are upside down. I really like the ride, it is fun, smooth and really isn't scary.
Tower of Terror for me isn't scary at all. You just go up and down. There is some suspense as to when it will stop, but that is what is fun about the ride. You definitely need to try each one.

Re: How scary are they really?
Thanks for the info everyone! I am definitely going to try RnRC, it sounds like I'll be fine on that one. I like coasters and I don't mind loops, so that's cool.
ToT...I'll have to decide on that one when I see it. One more question abou it though...are you standing up, or sitting down in the "elevator"? Also, is it jerky? |

Re: How scary are they really?
Tower of Terror LITERALLY tromitized me for life.
DON'T DO IT! People will tell you it's not that bad, and they're NUTS! I'm not a very scardy person, I love all the other rides, but ToT scared me screamless! At one point in the ride, I sort of lifted out of my body and I couldn't even scream I was so scared, everything went in slow motion. After it was FINALLY done my legs were compleate jelly and I couldn't get out of the elevator. I wobbled my way out into the sunlight and just colapsed onto a bench for 20 mins, trying to regain composure. But you know, try everything once :)

Re: How scary are they really?
I am thinking that is how I will feel on it too! I'll start with RnRC and see how gutsy I'm feeling after that :-)
I noticed yo're from BC...how far is Disneyland California from BC? I might be possibly moving out from Toronto b/c my BF got offered an awesome new job, and I can just transfer mine to our Vancouver office. |

Re: How scary are they really?
I love thrill rides. RNR is a great ride. The only thing about this ride is the speed. You are going from a dead stop to top speed in no time at all.
TOT is all show. My 5 year old DS went on it and after it was over he said it was all Disney Magic. Of the two, TOT is in my opinion the most intimedating.

Re: How scary are they really?
I have to say that after reading all of the posts on RnRC on DC, I was excited to try it during our trip last May. We left our DSs with my DM so we could ride it during extra evening magic hour. Yikes! Very very fast, upside down (twice)..... ugh! Couldn't speak for a half hour afterwards; I was muted by fear! (And anyone who knows me knows I am a talker.)
Just so you know, I am not a "coaster-hater" -- I could ride Big Thunder Mountain over and over, for example. And for the record, Dr. Teeth *loved* this ride. But I will never, never, never, *never* set foot on this ride again! I just had to put my two-cents in. Sorry to rain on the parade!

Re: How scary are they really?
To me RnRC isn't scary cuz it goes too fast to have time to be scared. It's fun since you can't see what's coming next. ToT on the other hand is totally scary. It goes slow, then drops fast. The free-fall feeling is unreal. Although I do think everyone has to at least try it once. Even though ToT scares the you-know-what out of me I keep going back for more each trip!!! Also, everyone has their own views on what's scary. My 12 yrold cousin cried and cried on Alien Encounter cuz she was so scared - but rode ToT over and over loving it more each time!

Re: How scary are they really?
Thanks everyone for the valuable and honest input! I guess I'll just have to see how I feel when I get there. I'm one of those people that some days, I feel invinsible, and will try anything. Other days I am scared of everything! Hopefully my MGM day will be the first one :-)
I really appreciate all the replies. You guys are so nice to the newbies! |

Re: How scary are they really?
MickeyMc, here's my 2 cents worth.
Just so you know up front, I am a ToT FANATIC (I once rode it 9 times in a row!) and I also looooove RnRC. But I will try to give you my objective opinion, based on my family members' feelings toward the rides.I will also try to walk you through a little bit, so you know what to expect. Tower of Terror: You are sitting down and strapped in with a seatbelt, so there is very little room for flying out of your seat or anything. (They used to be lap bars, which left space for you to fly up. To thrill junkies like me, that was more fun! ) But you will be strapped down, so no worries there. Don't worry about dropping the first time the elevator starts moving. You will go through a bit of a "show" and some special effects, including thunder & lightning...(the thunder was the scariest part to my little sister, because it made the ride seem a lot more sinister than it really was. She loved the drops, but the pre-show really scared her.)You will NOT start dropping until after the elevator has moved forward through a room, and then stopped in a dark elevator shaft. That's when you know to prepare yourself for the drops. If you're really scared, ask the person assigning seats if you can sit in the back. You will feel a little more protected back there, and it won't be as scary as sitting in the front, where you feel vulnerable! The drop sequences are completely random, controlled by a computer. So there is no telling how many times your elevator will go up/down. But after the first drop (and the way your stomach feels - it's priceless! ) the rest is pretty easy. You'll zoom back up and drop a couple more times, but nothing is as jolting as that first drop. Just hold on and enjoy the ride! If you keep your eyes open, the windows in the front of the building will open and you'll be able to see further across the Studios than you could ever imagine! It's really incredible, especially at night. Remember they take your picture when you come back up after the first drop, so smile!!Rock n' Roller Coaster: The "scariest" thing about RnRC is watching it take off. It takes off super fast, and they've added some nice tire squeal sounds, so it is REALLY nervewracking to watch/hear. Even though I've been on it before, I find myself getting really nervous/excited the more times I watch and hear it take off! The BEST thing, in my opinion, is that the ride is indoors. There is no sun/sky/earth to watch tumble around, so you don't feel as dizzy or out of control as you would on an outdoor coaster. The takeoff is extremely fast, to the point that you will probably close your eyes without even meaning to. Just remember: the takeoff is when they take your picture, so that's why you'll see flashes! You'll go immediately from takeoff into multiple loops, so don't be surprised. They're smaller, corkscrewier loops than you would find on a big outdoor coaster. None are completely vertical or anything, so it's not quite as bad as it could be. It's very fast and disorienting, and the music is BLARING in your ears...but once you let yourself relax a little and enjoy the ride, you'll realize that it's very smooth and enjoyable! One of the scariest things about some coasters is that they shake and rattle a lot, making you feel out of control. This ride doesn't do that at all! It's really smooth, and with the big shoulder harnesses, you can't help but feel cozy and safe. ![]() I hope that helped a little bit! I've gotten some other people who aren't coaster freaks to go on these rides, and they had a great time after they reminded themselves to relax and enjoy it. Once you've conquered it, you'll feel so proud of yourself! Another reminder: Tower of Terror is one of the most (if not THE most) themed ride in WDW. It is MEANT to intimidate, from the outside of the hotel to the "bellhops" who work there to the creepy gardens you walk through, to even the eerie pre-show you watch before loading! So my advice to you is to try it during the day, when things will be less creepy. If you find that you like it, going at night adds lots of goosebumps and a little bit of extra fun. Good luck!!!
