Disney marathon (Jan 2007)

For better or worse I have signed up to compete in the half marathon at Disney in January 2007. I have never ran a marathon and really do not like running. However, I am running with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Societys Team in Training and supporting a good cause. As I understand I will be running through parts of Epcot and Magic Kingdom (including back stage areas).

Has anybody participated in the marathon before? Would love to hear some of your experiences as I need all I can get to get motivated.

Steve

Re: Disney marathon (Jan 2007)

Hi there! I did the half marathon this past January. It was my very first race and I was hooked! I just finished the Country Music marathon in Nashville and I'm doing the Disneyland half in September and the WDW half again in January 2007.

You're going to love it. I used a book called "Marathoning for Mortals" by John Bingham to help me prepeare. There's a really good training schedule in there.

Re: Disney marathon (Jan 2007)

Congrats! I did the half marathon 2 years ago and had a blast and am trying to do it again this year. I also did it with TNT. They are great. My advice is to take advantage of thier training and fundraise early. I didn't really do either and it was diffecult for me towards the end. Definitly go to the pasta dinner thing the day before. It was great food, tons of people and insperational (sp?). 2 years ago the course was a little different from now but we did see some behind the scenes of Epoct and MK. Some of it not that glamorous, but some of it was cool like old ride cars etc. And it is so awesome to walk through the parks in the twighlight hours with no one else there. I was lucky to get inbetween two big groups of people and was virturally by myself through some parts so I really felt like I had the parks to myself. I'm sure you will have a great time and this will just be the first of many marathons for you! Everyone seems to get hooked after the first one.

Re: Disney marathon (Jan 2007)

I am not sure about getting hooked on the marathons. Everybody tells me that I will, but I really dont like running. Disney was a great option though for a first time.

Re: Disney marathon (Jan 2007)

Just read that the new course does not go through much of Epcot but still goes through Magic Kingdom. Runs through the castle and then go backstage by the floats.

Re: Disney marathon (Jan 2007)

I have not run the Disney half but I have run 2 half marathons. My only advice is to go out slower the 1st half and pick up your pace the 2nd half. It is amazing how much better you feel compared to doing it the opposite.

Re: Disney marathon (Jan 2007)

I have just started training and at this point I am saying there is no way I can make it that far. Have been slowly working back into shape. Made it five miles today and it seemed like forever. I still have a long time to get into shape before the run. The thought of running through MK at 7:00-8:00 am is keeping me going for now.

Did you get yourself any kind of training guide? I don't mean to push that book, because there are others, but a sensible, long term training guide will give you the confidence you need to reach your goal.

Re: Disney marathon (Jan 2007)

Team in Training provides a coach and support staff for the training. The coach for my area is a personal trainer (I think he gets paid more for each person that finishes but I am not sure about that). To promote Team in training he ran 10 marathons in 19 days.

My official training does not start until mid August. I am just pre-training at this point. I have talked to the coach and have seen his training program. He says with his plan he can have anybody of any age or shape ready to complete a full marathon in four months. He believes in running no more than 3-4 days a week in order to save the joints. Only one long run a week. I have talked to a few of his students who said they had the same doubts that I do when they started and that they completed the marathon with no problems.

I am going to look at the book also just to compare. I know that I will be ready, but it seems like I have so far to go.
