More trouble for Mission Space

More trouble for Mission Space:

Woman loses consciousness after Disney ride Tue Jul 11, 11:29 AM ET

A woman lost consciousness while getting off a Walt Disney World ride, which two people have died on in the past 13 months, authorities said.

The 35-year-old woman was getting off "Mission: Space" when she fell about 8:30 p.m. Monday, Deputy Chief Bo Jones of the Reedy Creek Fire Department told the Orlando Sentinel.

She told rescue workers she had tingling in her arms and hands, Jones said. She was taken by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center in stable condition.

The woman's name has not been released.

A telephone call by The Associated Press to Disney officials was not immediately returned Tuesday morning.

"Mission: Space" spins in a centrifuge that subjects riders to twice the normal force of gravity.

Hiltrud Bluemel, 49, died April 12, one day after she went on the ride. A preliminary report from the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office showed Bluemel died from bleeding of the brain. She also suffered from severe, long standing high blood pressure, according to the medical examiner's office.

A 4-year-old Pennsylvania boy also died last June while riding the attraction. An autopsy determined Daudi Bamuwamye, of Sellersville, Pennsylvania, died of an irregular heartbeat linked to a natural causes.

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

There is so much of this happening lately! It is aweful!! This is bad of me to think this way but I think it will get to the point where a bunch of people will starting getting "hurt" and sueing Disney for major $$$$. I hope that doesn't happen. WDW is a happy magical place where you can go and leave the world we live in today behind.

I feel so sorry for the families of loved ones who have passed recently in inccedents at disney and I mean nothing negative to them at all. My prayers are will them. I can't imagine what I would do if something like that happens on our trip.

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

I don't know, I don't want to pass judgement and say that anyone was just looking to benefit from other tragedies, but I also don't want to completely clear Disney. This ride seems to be a bit dangerous. I don't think I will end up riding it during my trip. In fact, I just got off the phone with my Dr.'s office and have asked that I get a check up with specifications paid to the heart before our Sept trip. I think this is a bit nerotic, but I would rather be a bit crazy about it before hand than have my family be sorry after! I hope this woman is feeling better and if I were her I would count my lucky stars that this was all that happened. Seems like a warning sign to me!

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

hmmm.,..interesting. Lots of bad press for WDW lately. I wonder if the woman's condition was due the the ride or the heat...or both. I will wait to see what is released later to give a real opinion of course.

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

First of all I want to say that I feel terrible for these tragedies. I don't want anyone to think that I don't have sympathy for the people and the families that are affected by these horrible events.

However...you know what bugs me? There is always some headline when something happens at a Disney Park. It is so obvious that the media is out to get Disney. I live near a Paramount park and recently one of the high profile rollercoaster malfunctioned and rolled backward when it was supposed to be shooting straight up. The first emergency brake failed and the second worked. People were hurt and hospitalized. But you don't see this making national news or plastered on the headlines of CNN.com. Just Disney seems to get this honor!

Accidents happen. Nothing is fail-proof. Human error has to be taken into account - even human error in judgement on the part of the people who ride the rides. I hate living in a society of people who aren't willing to take responsibility for their own choices!

I just can not understand this .. I have high blood pressure and I am older dirt .. my husband has M.S. and one of the symptoms is a feeling of motion sickness all the time!! I mean he only has to move his head and he gets nauseated, but we both love this ride ..we have been on it sooooo many times .. we follow the instructions and never have either of us had a problem.

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

Honestly I don't think it's a desire to "get" Disney. I think it's more that Disney is THE place people think of when they think of amusement parks. (And on another downside, they tend to assume that's all it is.) It's also thought of as the most kid-friendly place as well. Many people may not even know about Paramount HAVING a theme park. So when someone dies or is injured at Disney, it makes the news in a way it won't anywhere else.

I wish that were true.
I think it is a desire to get Disney.
ANY company with deep pockets seems to always be a target of the media.

Sorry to disagree!

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

ok here's the story...mission space is an incredibley safe ride...with all sympathy i have i hope the families find peace..but he ride is still a ride the precautions are lsited on the outside and you are told a billion times wha t to do and if you do not think it is safe then you shouldn't do it it's a very powerful thrill ride not everyoen can handle it...so if someone cant then they shouldn't ride it...also diseny is of course going to be attacked by the media. say you mention diseny online or on the news it will draw attention, any massive organization will be used as bait to get the media to be watched or read...also i have heard that in mission space there is a movement free ride that once you get on it it shows simulation but you don't move...also the problem with massive g-forces is that everyoen reacts differently to them i happened to do a report on rollar coasters and the g-forces ect. i learned the people with previous heart and brain problems are at the highest risk next to the ederly..you jsut plainly have to know what your about ot put your body through before you get on this type of ride...

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

I hope the woman is ok. I look forward to finding out more information about this before I make any comments. She could have been overheated or maybe she could not handle the spinning or maybe she had an underlying health condition. There is no reason to jump to conclusions at this early time. I know that I can ride any coaster out there without any trouble. but MS gives me a headache and the preassure in my head is tremendous. After riding it 3 times last trip, I chose to sit out and let the rest of the family enjoy it.

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

I really hate to see this happen so frequently. I know I was unusually nervous when I rode it in May. I let my 6 year old and 8 year old ride it and I found myself looking over at them like every 5 seconds. My 8 year old said she felt sick afterwards but last year she rode it back to back without any problems. It was all systems go for my 6 year old. I think people should really think about their health before taking on the more intense version.

Re: More trouble for Mission Space

it is a personal decision riding any intense ride at any theme park or amusement park. As I wrote ..my husband has Multiple Sclerosis and he loves Mission Space, never gets sick on it but he follows the directions they give you like -- not looking side to side during the ride. He can not ride the Teacups or Pooh ..and I get sick on Space Mt. I also think every time they drop me on TOT it will be the last time !! But I choose to get back on
