wheel chairs and scooters?

I did a search for any info here on the wheel chairs at the parks but didnt find anything .. if I remember right they rented for the same cost as the strollers (back when we used strollers) Does anyone know what they cost to rent now and the cost of those scooter things to rent?

I think you are correct about the cost of the wheelchairs being the same as the strollers. Which by the way increased to $8 with a $1 refund if you return it for your Disney dollar. The electric scooters are $30 or more (don't know if that price increased) with a $10 refundable key deposit.

wow $30.00 sounds like a great price .. hubby really doesnt want to have to use a wheel chair ..and his is more likely to accept using one of the scooters :)

Someone out there may need to help me out here now. I just got a different opinon that the scooters were much more. But I really thougt $30 was close. Anyone?? I loaned out my Unofficial guide. If you have one or a Passporter you could check there. I remember seeing the costs in one of those. Sorry Tink... hope I didn't get your hopes up for nothing!

Dab, you're right, they're $30 - you can also rent one by the week from a couple of sites around Orlando. They will deliver and pick up at your hotel, too, all for only $70. I've a friend who used one for her husband and raved about the service.

Disney busses can carry the motorized scooters - you can take them right on board, through the side, back door. You will be boarded first, then everyone else loads. It's very convenient.

oooo that is such great news !! hubby isnt really accepting of his disability and he has really been saying no to a wheel chair ..but I think he will accept a scooter easier !! I have been so worried because with MS .. the heat can make him worse, and trying to cover the parks in the heat with his cane would never ever work .. thank you !!!! thank you !!! and thank you!!

Me too. I broke my ankle pretty bad and had to have surgery and things are slow going. After trying to negotiate parking lots in cast and crutches for a week, I finally gave in and agreed to getting a handicap pass.

I really don't know how I'm going to do in June, but I do know that my family won't be happy if I'm conking out by 10 in the morning, and I *REALLY* need this vacation. So, I'm sucking down pride in order to make this a better event for everyone around. I *hate* the attitude I get when I go to the mall. I *hate* the stares, and the indirect whispers.

And the kids are excited with the thought of renting a "rascal" (as Mickey calls it)

MickeyMac I understand how you feel about the stares and whispers .. I thought my hubby was imaging it till we went to a zoo a couple of weeks ago with our grandaughters .. he was stubborn and didnt take his cane .. His M.S. has caused him to have no balance or cordination ..so he stumbles badly and it gets worse as he gets tired or in heat .. I actually heard one couple saying "look at that drunk" hubby is dealing with enough as it is, our plans for this WDW trip are very special and are going to do a lot to lift his spirits, I want it to be the best for him. He is still very angry at being considered *disabled*.

Oooooohhhhh, stuff like that burns me up. I used to think it was all imagination too, until I got in a wheelchair. Now I make it a point to look everyone in the eye and *smile* (but that's wicked tough some days)

I do hope your husband comes to his own personal terms with this. It's incredibly aggravating, frustrating, and if he lets it, humilitating. It's also a learning opportunity (at least it has been for my kids), uplifting (love seeing things from a child's perspective), and can be extremely funny (I hve a list of snappy comebacks for rude behavior of others.)

Besides, letting the kids use the scooter is a total hoot. Have you tried going to Walmart and using them as a trial? Actually, that might be a bad idea, I've run into some winners over there...:p

its kinda funny you mentioned the ones at wal mart .. I have hinted that he give them a try .. but He really really doesnt want anyone to see him as disabled .. we have been talking over our disney trip and he is slowly coming around to understand that there is no way he is going to be able to do this with only his cane .. but he isnt there yet ..but it will be next summer any way and I have lots of time to work on it. He did laugh about the idea of having a scooter and our granddaughters prolly wanting to give it at least a test drive. Currently I am really impressed with that Randys scooter link and since they can go on the busses that will be just perfect !!

Don't know if this will help or not, but if it comes down to a wheel chair or scooter take the scooter if doing buses. When we had my father in a wheel chair this Nov. NONE of the bus drivers offered to help us load the wheel chair onto the buses!!!:devil They just sat there and opened the back door and said, "put it back there.." No one lifted a finger plus we had a two toddlers and a double stroller and diaper bags -- still no help!!! If you can roll a scooter right on go for it!! Cause IMHO you won't get any help with a wheel chair and a person who does not appear "really" disabled (my father is 72 and also loses his balance frequently and has trouble lifting his leg to step up on a bus.)

I was really surprised at your not recieving any help from the bus driver .. I know when we have gone in the past the drivers always helped those that were getting on and off in wheel chairs.
I am sure the scooter is the best way for us to go anyway ..because a wheel chair to my husband seems to not be an option ..he is a stubborn cuss :(
