Disney plans "Haunted High School Musical" feature

Disney plans "Haunted High School Musical" feature

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co. said it will follow up on the success of its "High School Musical" made-for-TV movie and soundtrack by releasing a big-screen spin-off, "Haunted High School Musical," in 2008.
The original "High School Musical," made for $4.2 million, was a Romeo and Juliet-style production widely derided by critics but embraced by fans around the world.
It premiered in 2006 and has been viewed by 100 million people, spawned the top-selling album in the U.S. in 2006, sold 6.5 million DVD units worldwide and a concert tour.
Disney on Thursday said "High School Musical" would contribute $100 million to profits in 2006 and 2007.
Disney did not reveal the plot of the "Haunted" movie.
Disney on Wednesday said first-quarter operating income at its cable networks increased $81 million to $453 million, driven by increases at the international Disney channels and domestic Disney/ABC cable networks.
The increase at the domestic cable networks was driven in part by DVD sales of "High School Musical" and higher affiliate and advertising revenues, the company said.
Disney has said it also plans to release "High School Musical 2" this summer on its cable network, Disney Channel.
"('High School Musical') skyrocketed to heights never before achieved by a TV movie, so it's only fitting that its next incarnation should be as a major motion picture," said Gary Marsh, president of entertainment for Disney Channel Worldwide.
Internationally, "High School Musical" has aired on 26 Disney Channels worldwide and broadcast networks, reaching over 100 countries.

Yay! I love anything HSM. The kids are so cute and the tunes are catchy. A full feature film seems like a good next step.

I know this topic isn't meant for this forum, but I'll contribute anyways. If you think that's great news or not, I've got bigger. This year, on the Disney Channel, High School Musical 2 will premiere! Already seen the commercial for it.

Yep, my DD voted for what she would like to see in HSM 2 this summer. I also can't wait for Zac Effron in Hair Spray.

High School Musical doesn't float my boat.
I'd still like to see "The Fantasiks" recast with the Disney characters instead.

Re: Disney plans "Haunted High School Musical" feature

I guess I will be the lone voice here...well actually I did think HSM was nicely done for a TV movie and you can't deny its popularity.

I guess really my thing is Disney Media Marketing...they seem to not be able to just enjoy the success and move on. EVERY project that becomes a hit (and even a few that weren't) gets bled dry. All of them end up getting at least one sequel and some "holiday specials" and such. Often the result is total over kill, an inundation of the materiel until people are burnt out on it. It appears that HSM will be the latest in that chain.

Oh well...kudos for those of you that don't mind it, nothing is forcing me to see/buy the stuff...I just think the money and talent that gets put into it all could be used better on other/new stuff, rather than sequels and specials that branched from one hit or another. Sometimes all those "extras" end up dragging the original down with them.

You mean like "Cinderella 3" now available on DVD for a "limited time"?
Nice avatar, Captain Nemo becomes Finding Nemo.
