21,000 Cast Members' Labor Agreement Expired April 28th
Any word on if Disney and the Unions have settled on a new labor agreement? The last thing I heard was that they were in negotiations as of the 27th of April. I'm supposing there's no strike considering that would make HUGE headlines.

Disney would be stupid to let their employees get to the strike stage. I can't imagine what that would do to their operation...

A quick update:
Seems like 4/5 of the unions have reached an agreement but nothing settled yet. The last union to agree loves attention and might be holding out as a publicity stunt. I heard this information on the DIS Podcast. |

Me too - although...
It would be funny to show up with my Mickey shirt on and jump in and operate EE myself... I might get to ride a few times! Like a self-service amusement park |

Disney must really be pinching pennies! ABC & the Union that represents the TV engineers in the major markets have called off negotiations until the end of this month. ABC wants to take away paid lunch hours, lose seniority layoff rules & freeze pensions!
This can only lead to one thing... Increased ticket prices!!

Re: 21,000 Cast Members' Labor Agreement Expired April 28th
It's hard to think of Disney as "Just another Business" because of the atmosphere, etc.. but when you break it down to its simple pieces, it's really just that. Suits and Employees. Just like any of us that have unions behind us. I'm a civil service employee here in NY so i'm part of CSEA. We have all of our negotiations done by others and behind the scenes, but i can understand the frustrations these CM's for Disney are going through.
Here's hoping it gets worked out soon and all are happy

Re: 21,000 Cast Members' Labor Agreement Expired April 28th
I'm full time here, but I'm not in the Union. However, I've many friends who are. They will vote I believe at the end of the week on a new proposal. Remember, they don't go on strike until the 3rd proposal gets rejected. Seeing as the last contract was the final one of the Eisner era, I've a feeling this one can only be better.

Re: 21,000 Cast Members' Labor Agreement Expired April 28th
You're right Matt..
usually the first contract under new ownership or after an expiring contract is the best. As a matter of fact, our CSEA contract expired in March of 2007 so we are working without a contract while waiting for the new one to go into affect. Our contracts are usually 4 years in length and we've had the same union prez for a long while so we expect a deal to be reached soon. The cool thing about new contracts is there is usually a raise that comes out of every new contract signing. Not always, but with the State & the Civil Service, it usually happens. <Crossing my fingers for all of you guys and gals down in the House of Mouse>

Re: 21,000 Cast Members' Labor Agreement Expired April 28th
Thanks for the insider input Matt! The only information I've found is from the various WDW Podcasts on the net. If you could keep updated that would be wonderful.
I'm biting my nails at the thought of having my Disney Vacation cancelled due to a strike. Making me cringe at the fact that I passed on the vacation insurance for an additonal $250. Though as an ex-union member I know how difficult a time negotiations are. Let's hope both sides can reach a fair agreement without disrupting the daily magic at WDW. |
