WDW in August

My mum/dad/brother will be going to WDW Late August/Early September and were worried about the weather and crowd levels.
Anyone have any advice I can pass to them?

Re: WDW in August

We've done WDW in Aug the past several years (and again this year). The obvious points - Hot - lots of sunscreen, repeatedly - Hats - sunglasses.

Enjoy the cooler times outside - Early Morning & Evening - take a nap/pool break mid-day and then enjoy the nightlife. Or plan to be inside more at mid day, a little Downtown Disney shopping?

By convincing my boys they have to drink water at least once every hour we seem to cope with the heat alright and it helps control the soft drinks, "water first than you can have pop".

Local schools start mid Aug so crowds are a little better than full on summer, but still plan on patience and flexibility. You'll get afternoon showers most days, but usually very shortlived, sometimes full on rain but normally just enough to drive up the humidity for the next hour or two.

If they want to do AK plan on being there first thing, the animals find it hot through midday as well and will be hiding.

MOST IMPORTANT - Make your ADR's now if you want a particular sit down meal. We did have luck in the past getting an ADR at the customer service area when we had to change our plans but you won't get your pick of times and may not get your pick of restaurant.

Re: WDW in August

This is my first time to go in August and I'm anticipating that there will still be crowds and lots and lots of heat!! Another suggestion would be to get a Fast Pass whenever you can and be sure to be walking in and out of stores and the like for bursts of cool fresh air. Drink water whenever possible and listen to your body; if you need a break be sure to take it.

Re: WDW in August

I would also suggest taking advantage of the EMH whenever possible, and planning on breaks at the hotel during the midday hours.

Re: WDW in August

We are going in mid-August! Our plan is to hit the parks early, back to the resort midday to rest and swim and then do the parks again in the evening. This is on reason why I upgraded to a moderate hotel-we'll be spending most of our afternoons there- kids wanted a resort with a slide!

Re: WDW in August

It sounds like alot of us have the same plan for our hot hot August visit!

Early start/afternoon nap & swim/evening parks

We were in WDW last Sept. it was extremely hot then too.

We seemed to find alot of relief walking through the shops and when riding, most queues we waited in were air conditioned.

Drink alot of water and take lots of small breaks if you get tired. Don't try any commando touring plan during these hot times...you'll just get frustrated and exhausted!

This is the Disneyland Resort thread - not the Walt Disney World thread, I would suggest taking this question to the Walt Disney World section.

Re: WDW in August

I was there last August and we only dealt with serious rain one night (the remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto) so we headed back to the resort early and had a good time hanging out in the POR bar with the entertainment there.

The rest of the time was hot but not unbearable (and my mom really, really hates the heat). Just pace yourself and if you have one person who is more heat resilent than the rest, try to send them traipsing all around to get Fast Passes to cut down on everyone having to walk all over the place and backtrack, etc.

Well, that explains why more of us didn't see this thread.
Like it's been said. It will be hotter'n Hades (mid 90s), likely heavy passing thunderstorms every afternoon and early evening, and humidity that makes the air feel like a damp sponge, welcome to Florida in simmer.
Crowds won't be the worst, after all, it is value season, but crowds will ramp up going into Labor Day and also September free dining.
Bring sunscreen, ponchos, and extra dry clothes.
