Walkie Talkie

Any input on bringing a set of walkie talkies or two-way type radios? I was thinking they may come in handy if the baby needs a break and the other two kids want to stay. Do they work okay??? Any problems???

Thanks!

We have used them in the past, though the range is limited. They will work within one park, but you won't be able to talk to each other from the resort to the park. We usually use them when we split up, it helps us to find each other quickly. We have gone now to cell phones, since we both have free roaming/no long distance, it is just a bit easier to get a hold of each other, and we can get each other all over WDW.

Speaking of walkie talkies, i saw the disney one's at Epcot. They were $60.00!!!!!!!! I've seen them advertised for $39.00 or $49.00 at circuit city. Plus, they are *very* tiny! I was thinking of getting a pair, but not sure if I will now.

I see ton's of people using walkie talkies in the parks. I have heard that you get other people's conversations on them, since there are only so many "channels" to use. I've heard that most brands, you can use them up to 2 miles apart, but in certain places it's hard to get good reception out of them (like cell phones too)

My wife and I both have cell phones. We just convert our cell phone plan to national for the month. That way we can call each other if we get separated.
We can also call home to check on our little pluto without using the room phone and having to pay long distance.

with the girls now old enough to go to the resort pool alone I was thinking maybe of using a set this year, but only at the resort. like others posted here we just use our cell phones but actually we rarely separate at the parks. there have been those odd occasions when I have had to run back to the room for something :( its not old age ..its the excitement ..yeah thats it .. thats why I forget

If you plan in using the two-way radios, make sure you have a set that uses sub-channels. That will give you a much better chance of finding a channel to talk on without a lot of other people on it.

We used walkie-talkies a couple of weeks ago and had no problems whatsoever. They have 14 channels with 12 sub-channels. Like other have said before, they work great inside the park but once you get in the parking lot, it gets a little fuzzy. We never needed them any further than that. I was glad I had them.

I understand that people have to use walkie-talkies and such, but PLEASE remember to turn them off when you are in inside theatre presentations, like American Adventure,Hall of Presidents, etc. One time I was listening to Voices of Liberty and no less than 4 cell phones,walkie-talkies,what have you went off during the singing. That,to me,is very rude.(Oh,okay, off my soapbox now!!!)

Life saver for us

we used the two way radios while we were at Universal Studios and Animal kingdom. 21 yr nephew went with us and he took the kids on certain rides for a 2nd ride and dh & i sat and people watched. It was nice because we ended up changing our meeting place. :dazed

I also went shopping and took one with me. To each their own. They came in handy for us. Maybe see if someone will let you borrow some before you go out and buy some.

I took the walkie talkies with me when i went to do the laundry and kids and i carried on trucker talk. breaker breaker. :laugh Dh is a trucker so he was giving them help. We all had handles. it was quite funny. Nephew also took one and took the kids to arcade at resort. They just couldn't wait until i got my shoes on. we got ours at walmart. cheapest prices i could find. and i gave them to the kids for christmas last year. we use them around the house. When the kids go down the street and i need to be able contact them. At the ball park. and at the mall. Christmas shooping is alot easier when you get a hold of your party if you have finished earlier than you expected.

Thanks for your input! I found a pair at Best Buy for $40, but send in a $30 rebate it comes to $10. Not a bad deal. I am sure if they don't work out in WDW we can use them for other puposes...

Ours are Motorola too - only they are the Disney ones from Target. Very cute but also annoying in that after each communication, a character (Buzz, Lilo, martian, Mike) says something. I thought that would be cute...it get old!!!:dazed

DisneyAnne, I've been thinking about getting these, are they very small? I saw a pair for sale at Epcot this weekend for $60.00!! I know target and circuit city have them for cheaper than that. So you are saying, that everytime you say something into the walkie talkie, that a character also says something? Just trying to get a good idea of what we want to get. I would like to be able to use them around my neighboorhood w/my son. I don't think we'll have much use for them at WDW, but you never know.
