Which week in January will be best?

Hello,
I am now picking out the dates for the next trip. We are planning January of 2009. Last year we went the second week in January. I have heard that around MLK day it can be crowed. So which week will have the smallest crowds? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to any week in Jan?
Thanks!

Re: Which week in January will be best?

I have been twice in the month of January and both times our trip included my Birthday on 30th. The weather the first year was actually very warm ( well for us it was, there were still people walking around with hats and gloves which made us chuckle but in the UK january is freezing so to have temperatures around 70 was lovely! ) The 2nd time though, it was a bit chillier, there was a very cold snap for a few days.
The crowd levels are wonderful though. There is still a great vibe and lots of people but hardly any waiting around and large queues. I would happiily go back in that month. Only prob I have now is my DD is at school age and it's so hard to take kids out of school during term time here so I am restricted to certain times of the year now.

I think you will really like it.

I'd say the later weeks of Jan versus the early ones. It was pretty busy ther the first week of Jan when I was there this year.

Re: Which week in January will be best?

I think 2nd week in January is pretty good. Although, we have always planned it to be leaving the start of MLK weekend.

Re: Which week in January will be best?

Just an FYI: marathon weekend has been growing exponentially each year. We had quite the time trying to get a room during that week for this past January. I already booked 1/09 just so I wouldn't be locked out again. And the race itself reached capacity a month ago.

So.....avoid marathon weekend if possible. Next year it will be Jan 10th.

Re: Which week in January will be best?

January's getting a little tougher. Of course if you're trying to avoid crowds, you don't want to arrive before Jan 5 in 09. New Year's is going to be a long weekend this year because New Year's Day is Thursday, so you have to figure lots of people have the 2nd off. Then as ddoll points out, the marathon is the next weekend. I'd sneak in that week from Monday 12 and be gone by Saturday, before MLK birthday. If not, wait until Wednesday after MLK for all crowds to drop to winter levels.

Do you understand? This will be on the final and will be worth 1/4 of your grade.

Re: Which week in January will be best?

The first week of January was rough this year because nearly all of Florida's public schools were out for the holidays. Typically, the first week after the the schools are open and the last weeks are very good. MLK is not a good time during January either. If you want a good tip for checking school schedules, google Miami-Dade, Broward and Osceola County School Calendars. That's where the bulk of the local traffic will come from.

That's what I was afraid of. My wife wants to go back that weekend as our school system will be off for 4 or 5 days in a row.
So, anyone that's been during MLK weekend that can compare it to other busy times of the year?
We've been during Spring Break, so we know how big the crowds can be. We've also been during the week of Christmas, but I can't really count that as it was right after 9/11 and I'm sure this had a big impact on attendance.
Thanks.

Re: Which week in January will be best?

At the end of January, your typical wait times are a 4-6 on a scale of 10. 10 being the worst. During MLK, you will see 7-8.

What does 4-6 and 7-8 equate to in terms of time? Thanks.

Re: Which week in January will be best?

On the most popular rides, you can see a peak wait time of 30-40 minutes with a 4-6. With a 7-8, you are 1-1.5 hours.

Thanks for the info.
Is this just for MLK day, or the Sat/Sun weekend too?
IF we go, we'd be there on the Sat/Sun before MLK and the Tuesday after MLK day as well.
Thanks.
