Appropriate Age for the Water Park

We have never been to the water parks at Disney, mainly because our children have been very young when we went. I have 2 DDs ages 5 and 4 who like the water but are not great swimmers yet. At what age do you feel the kids will really enjoy it and get the most out of a day at the water parks?

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

The kids who seem to enjoy it the most are the ones you don't have to keep a perpetual eye upon. 9-12 seems about right (It may vary based upon the child). A 5 and 4 year old will have just as much fun at a resort pool as they would playing in the kiddie pools at the theme parks. Especially if you take the afternoon break to do so.

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

DisneyRx--I'm glad you asked this question, because DH and I have often wondered the same thing. We've never done the water parks either because our youngest just hasn't seemed ready. She'll be 5 by the time we go back, and our oldest will be 10 and our middle child will be 8. I've been thinking MAYBE next time, but is little DD still just too young? I can't wait to read everyone's input.

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

Several years ago, I went to Typhoon Lagoon with Babs & her family. Her baby was a little over one yr old (if I remember correctly). There was something for everyone to do. At TL, I don't think there was any age limit. It was a water park for all ages.

I agree. We bought the FL resident after 2pm water park annual pass in February and have been many times. My DD is 3 and DS is 2. We have a great time. They have plenty for them to do and enough for DH and I to do as well. It's a great time!!

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

We went last year and our oldest two-ages 8 and 11 at the time LOVED it. Our youngest was 3 at the time and he also had a good time. Of course, I watched him like a hawk the entire time, and he did get knocked down by a wave at the wave pool once.(We were at TL). We did choose not to go with DH and the two older kids to BB, we did MK instead. My advice is to try it with little ones, but only plan on half a day to spend there. That is our plan again this year.

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

I really think it's best to wait until they are older and stronger swimmers. I think they would have a better time and you would have less worry about them. The resort pools (moderate, deluxes and DVCs) all have water slides at their pools and can be loads of fun.

I think the water parks offer something for kids of all ages, even little ones.

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

Are there life vest available for children to use? Neither of my children ages 11 & 5 are strong swimmers yet and when we visit the outdoor pool at Lifetime I am very comfortable sitting out of the pool and just observing. This maybe an option for OP to use life vest for added peace of mind.

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

I think the water park has things to offer for all ages. If you have the water park & more option on your tickets then it is worth going. I'm not sure I would pay to go in when the kids were that little. They won't be able to go on a lot of the slides. I found it hard the first time I went because my youngest couldn't go on half the slides that the rest of us could go on. Last summer was great when we could all do everything together.

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

DS 9 and DD 7 are both very strong swimmers and are able to enjoy the time we spend at the water parks. DS 4 and DS 10 months LOVE to play in the kiddie areas and take a trip on the Lazy River. All of the kids love the wave pools. We visit a waterpark here in Cincy (Kings Island) about once a week so they are used to the environment.

Re: Appropriate Age for the Water Park

I agree the disney water parks have something for every year. On one of our first trips we took DD4 and DS 1 to Blizzard Beach and they loved it. LAst year we took DD 7 and DS 4 and THEY had the most amazing time and can't wait to go back. We went to TL the last time. They had water slides for both of their ages. And they loved playing in the kiddie section and in the sand.
