Icon5 Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

In all my years of having gone to DL/WDW, I never rode Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Has anyone here ever rode it? What was it like? Why did WDW do away with it?

Re: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

We rode it years ago. It was turned into Pooh but who knows why. I believe the track is the same but I may be wrong there.

Yes, I rode that in 1993. I don't know why they did away with it.

I rode it at DL &WDW same ride. They still have Mr Toad at DL. I guess you have to plan a trip to DL to ride it.

Re: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

I've ridden it in the past, and... um... well, we found a video of it, since Cubby'd never ridden it. I have to honestly say that, as a ride (not of course speaking sentimentally, which is a different matter altogether), I think Pooh is really much better. It's like some of the stuff I miss at Epcot -- I've seen videos of it and have realized that there was some really clunky stuff there. It might have been incredible if it had been re-imagineered and updated, but some of it is positively dire. Mr. Toad had a lot of 2-dimensional, flat, non-moving characters popping up and moving around, more than Pooh does, and I think it's just not as good a ride as Pooh.

That said, again, of course, Mr. Toad was a classic ride that goes back (er, went back) for years and years, and was remembered very fondly by many, many people. Requiescat in pace.

You can see a statue of Mr. Toad, in honor of the ride, in the "Pet Cemetery" outside the Haunted Mansion.

And of course if you look on the wall of Owl's house early in the Pooh ride there is a pic on the wall of Mr. Toad handing the deed to Owl.

Re: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

Two classics: Winnie the Pooh and The Wind in the Willows.

Ninety-nine out of a hundred kids are familiar with Pooh, ninety-nine out of a hundred have never heard of Ratty or Mole. Changing the ride only made sense, and I think the Pooh ride at WDW is a great attraction.

That's not to say that I don't like Mr. Toad. It's delightfully bizarre, and a product of a different time. Can you imagine something being created these days where you get to sent to to h e l l with the characters, and there are little dancing devils all around? I find it kind of awesome.

Also, I only tend to ride Toad once while I'm at Disneyland- whereas with WDW's Pooh I like to go multiple times. (Disneyland's Pooh only gets one ride, if that, if there's absolutely no line and I happen to be right there.)

I had never noticed the pic on Owl's wall. I will have to be sure to look for it on this trip.

Re: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

I rode it in 97 when I took my DD for her first trip to WDW. The next time we went in 2000, it was pooh. They did away with it to make room for a pooh attraction.

Re: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

I rode this in 1984 - my memory of it has to do with riding in a jalopy - being chased by keystone cops??? or something like that. I think I thought it was bizarre - but it was not your typical WDW ride. I remember it being across from 20,000 Leagues under the Sea? Now THAT was a ride! (not!)

Re: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

I rode it in DL in 2005. It wasn't a fun experience because I did not want to drive the car. My dad is really funny about driving rides, so I wanted him to sit in the drivers seat, but the CM (CMs are much nicer at WDW, I've observed) said that the kid has to drive (I was 14 and slightly offended... kid???) and shoved me in the seat. I was unhappy the entire ride.... hardly even paid attention to my surroundings.

Oh, and btw, the Imagineer I dined with - Alex something-or-another, the Art Director at MK added the tombstone to the graveyard the night before Halloween as a surprise. It was a secret, and the CMs didn't know about it.

We used to ride it. I think it was a cute ride. Nothing that special though. It definitely wasn't one of our favorites.

Re: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

Awe, I will have to look for Mr. Toad handing Pooh the deed. How clever. I have never noticed Mr. Toad in the HM cemetery. But, I'm going to look for him now. It's strange to know that we have never rode Mr. Toad's ride. But, now, we did ride the 20,000 Leagues under the Sea sub.

Re: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

I rode Mr. Toad for the first time (as I recall) in DL. I'm a big Pooh fan myself, so I don't miss Toad at all in WDW (can't miss whatcha don't do!)

The 'going to heck' bit was a little disturbing though.

And besides Pooh's rising popularity and Mr. Toad's diminishing, I don't know why they changed it... But I can't complain.
