Trading / Collecting Pins

My DD is 4 and we will be at WDW in 5 days...yippee!!!!

I think she is old enough to handle understanding the pins. What is a cheap package to start her off with and where can I purchase it?

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

My DD4 has been trading since she was 2 . . . and she it!

I would search on ebay . . . don't pay more then $2/pin with shipping . . . altho, you'd have to do a buy it now, since you leave in 5 days!

There are plenty of starter kits available at WDW . . . maybe let her pick out her first lanyard they come with a pin to keep and a pin to trade . . . they also sell trader kits.

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

I agree with getting pins off ebay. I've picked up some really great pins there, some were real keepers. My son has been trading since he was 5 or 6 and loves every minute of it.

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

My children love trading pins. You may want to try your local Disney Store. Recently they had a sale on pins and you can get sets with 4 for $14.50 (I was there this afternoon and I saw some really cute ones). Have fun.

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

My DD10 loves trading pins and we go on Ebay. There is a seller that only charges about $1.69 per pin. (allaboutme35) I purchased over 100 off her for my last trip and she sent them all wrapped in little baggies. Most of them I wanted to keep and all of them were Cast Member pins

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

I have never traded pins before and plan to dabble in it this trip.

I purchased clearance pins ($1.99) from the Disney Store yesterday. I specifically asked the clerk if these were tradeable in WDW with other cast members and she said yes.

Head out to your local Disney Store and check out what they have.

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

Hey Santa1961,

Since your future pin collector is so young, I HIGHLY recommend purchasing screw on pin-backs for the pins that are really treasured. (Can get wherever pins are sold at the parks) The cost is relatively cheap compared to the tears shed over pins lost while wearing a lanyard. (My son, age 8, has these backs and they've withstood much banging around) The only downfall is - If you need to get them off, there's an itty-bitty L-wrench to un-do them. So, for those that you WANT to trade, keep them on regular backs.

Happy Collecting!

We have been trading pins since 2003 and absolutley love it. My son was 4 1/2 at the time and he gets the idea of what is done. We only let him trade with CM as it is easier and less chance of rejection for trading. I would suggest getting a starter kit at WDW, I believe they are priced around $25.00 so you get the lanyard and four pins to start. Two to trade two to keep. Then go on ebay for future trips. Have fun - remember the backs do fall off at times so if you get pins that are "valuable" buy tthe locking backs. They save meltdowns - I promise.

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

I would not do Ebay for this trip - too close to your departure date! But they do have really good prices and you can find older pins that are not around anymore. Good thing is that if your DD wants a specific set but you cannot find them all in the parks you can find them on Ebay.

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

aweseom suggestion on the locking backs!!

DD is 5yo. and she & i are going to be pin trading for our 1st time this trip in Dec.

we were practicing between the 2 of us, so she knows what to do and that you trade for keeps...no crying afterwards...so be sure you trade a pin you don't want to keep. and she came to me a few minutes later and said that she had lost a rubber mickey head back...i could see then, that we were going to have to come up with some better backs. i thought about running by our local girl scout office and buying a pack of backs from there. the kind that lock on.

but instead i just ordered 20 off ebay! :o)

i got a kind that don't require a tool to unlock them. that sounds like a bit of a hassle to me.

we will put the locking ones on the keepers, and the rubber back ones on the traders!!

Re: Trading / Collecting Pins

I always keep a gallon ZipLock bag in our backpack for Nate's lanyard when he doesn't what to wear it. The bag keeps us from digging all over the backpack for pins and backs if they come off in the bag. He wears his about half the time and the other half of the time I carry it in the bag. We've never lost a pin with the rubber Mickey back but we've found several pins on the ground so I know they come off easily.

another great tip!!

i would have not thought of this, if you hadn't mentioned it. thanks!

i know both DD & i will get tired of wearing our lanyards...having the ziplocks to keep them in inside our carry-bag is a great idea.

I hope you're daughter has fun collecting and trading pins :-) I have always collected pins but never traded.. I think I'll try it while I'm there.
