my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

My friend, her DH,DD7 and DD8 just came home from a week at Disney and you're never going to believe what happened to her!!!

They were on Splash Mtn. and it stopped b/c of technical problems. They were sitting there and it started to rain. They sat in the rain for 20 minutes when a CM came over and said they were going to move them up a bit so they could get them off. They moved up and my friend helped her DD out of the log, then she went to step off and the log jerked forward with 1 of her legs on and one off!!! an ambulance had to come and take her to the hospital. They thought her leg was broken but thankfully it wasn't. She was in so much pain that night and her leg kept spasming!

I asked her how Disney handled the situation and she said that they gave the kids new clothes from a gift shop b/c they were soaked, said they would pay her ambulance cost and reimburse her for the hospital visit. I asked if they refunded their park tickets and she said no b/c they didn't cause a stink - but they did give them tickets for the next night's MNSSHP. She is now on crutches and for the rest of their trip she had to use an electric wheelchair.

She had a great time b/f that happened - but spending the night in the ER defiantely put a damper on things. She is just grateful that she had gotten her DD out 1st b/c if it had been her DD, she probably would have been seriously hurt.

Can you believe this happened? I feel so bad - this was their 1st Disney trip and all I could talk about is what a great time they were going to have. I think Disney should have offered them a free return trip or something. What do you think??

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

Wow! Sorry that happened to your friend! 20 minutes in the rain !

It sounds as if it could have been a lot worse too, glad it wasn't!!

Disney seemed to make good . . . I mean really how do you compensate someone for something like that? Sounds like a totally freak accident. Hope she doesn't have long term pain from it?

Sorry her first trip wasn't as MAGICAL as it should have been . . . ((hugs)) she feels better soon.

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

I hope Disney footed the bill for her electric scooter and she didn't have to pay the $31/day.

I also agree, I think they should have done a little more.

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

I am so sorry to hear that your friend was hurt while on her first WDW trip. I know that these are just words but accidents do happen and I think that Disney was fair. I thought it was very nice of them to buy new clothes because they sure didn't have any control over the weather!!

One thing I will say. Being that she was hurt on Disney property I am sure that someone from their Risk Management department will want a signature on a waiver stating that Disney will no longer be held responsible for her injuries. Having gone through something like this in a grocery store my piece of advice would be not to sign anything until she has been given an all clear from her doctor is she is pain free for a certain period of time (I waited a week since my injury was minor).

I hope the rest of her trip went well and is willing to give it another try at a later time.

WOW....I can't believe they didn't do more for her. Yes, I understand they are not responsible for the weather and it was really nice of Disney to buy everyone new clothes. But it was THEIR fault because the ride malfunctioned while they were on it...and the boat moved as they were trying to get out. I don't know, I think they should have done more. They should MOST DEFINTELY be paying for her scooter for the rest of the trip and they should have given them one day passes for each of them as well...since their day was cut short.

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

I too think Disney should have done more. My first thought was on top of paying things like mentioned, a few meals, bunch of fast passes, night free someplace. I think they got off easy. It was their fault. Not that they intended for anyone to get hurt. But if we hear how people getting upset (and getting compensated) because a server was rude or that the view from the room is looking at a wall, how much more when you have an injury.

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

OH MY GOSH, ouch!!!! I am glad it wasn't broken & I am glad she was at least able to do the rest of her trip, even if on crutches. I think it was fair that Disney offered to pay the ambulance & hospital visit (does that even matter with insurance though?), gave the children clothes, and gave them tickets to MNSSHP but I think maybe they should have also footed the bill for the electric wheelchair. I mean the electric wheelchair is directly correlated to the accident so I would have expected them to cover that too. And, maybe it would have been fair to give one day park tickets because of the day she lost due to the accident and ER visit.

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

that is horrible! I know out of ALL OF THE thousands and thousands people that pass by- it's still basically safe... but no matter what- when something bad happens- it's just so hard to believe HOW it could happen there! I feel sorry that it was their first time- At least your friend had a good time..... and thank god her DD didn't get hurt--- Oh - that just stinks!

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

Eek! Spending the night in the ER instead of Disney does not sound like fun.

I guess it was just an extremely unfortunate situation. I wouldn't blame the CM that was helping, because it's unlikely he or she knew the log would jerk. Since it was in attempt to get them out of the rain, it was actually a nice gesture, considering they could've just left them sitting there. I'm glad Disney bought them new clothes and paid for the ER.... like someone else said, I hope they paid for the scooter, as well.

I really hate that their trip was ruined. Hopefully this doesn't keep them from going back.

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

That poor little girl! And it was her 1st WDW trip. I too think Disney should have done more. Especially in this day & age of lawsuits. I worked in insurance for 11 years & saw people sue & win for way less than this little girl went through. Space Mountain scares me...I read some terrible things on other websites of injuries that I am questioning whether or not I'l let my own kids ride it. Atleast she's fine and still had a good trip.

This is exactly what I thought should be the minimum to be done for your friend. On top of what they already did!

I am sure we have not heard the last of the compensation from Disney. They are gonna offer some kind of monatary settlement.

Keep us posted.

OMG, that's terrible. I hope Disney footed the bill for the electric w/c. I can't believe they made them wait 20 min in the rain. That's really awful.

Well, the signs do say you will get wet.

Sorry to hear they had problems, but glad it wasn't too bad. Sounds like a bad mussle pull. I had one that was a knot and let me tell you it hurt like CRAZY!

Re: my friend was hurt on Splash!!!!

They paid for owfits, ambulance, hospital care and gave them free tickets to MNSSHP. I really think they handled it well. What happened it totally unfortunate, but I think they handled it the right way. I don't think she should get a free trip for an accident...surely some people would be suing WDW over this by now....accidents are just that...accidents. I am so sorry that she got hurt...what a way to experience WDW for the first time. I do hope they paid for the Wheelchair for the lenfth of time that she needed it.
