When do loves bugs appear? For how long do they hang around? I think I will plan my trip when they are NOT flying around everywhere.
ugh.

Re: Love bugs

I heard they are all year and mostly near resorts (such as the polynesian) that have many plants around. Figures, we're staying at the Poly.

No! They appear twice a year. In the spring (late April, early-mid May and September (during the height of free dining)).

This is perhaps the biggest reason we didn't go for free dining this year. In 2006, they were much worse on the south end of the property (i.e. AKL) than up near the MK (i.e. Contemporary). However, they are not confined to ground level. They did get up to the 12th floor, just the numbers weren't nearly as bad. They seem to be worst in the citrus farming areas and areas surrounding citrus groves.

Re: Love bugs

We hate the love bugs as much as the next person. We went to Disney the last week of Sept. 06 and CM's kept saying that it was the worst they have ever been hit and it was later confirmed on the news. Hope they are gone when we get there on the 12th!!

They will be. I can't remember seeing any love bugs in October going back 10 years. And I'd agree about September 2006 being the worst. Supposedly it had a lot to do with the 2005 hurricane season's effects on breeding. Actually, by the last week of September 2006, they were already declining rapidly. They were much much worse around the 15th!

They're just annoying. They don't bite or anything but they will damage your car's paint and finish if not cleaned right away. They're called love bugs because they fly as binary pairs, that is, they're joined at the hip most of the time.

Re: Love bugs

At first, I really did think you were talking about "love bugs"... as in newlyweds, etc. lol. Nothing like a quick trip to Wikipedia to make one feel like an idiot!

Re: Love bugs

Can anyone report on them currently? We are staying at BC Sept 17-22 and I would rather be forewarned. Thanks.

What do they look like? We have that ladybug problem here where your car is covered in them.

Re: Love bugs

Love bugs look like a smaller version of lightning bugs, without the glowing rear-end.
They fly around tail to tail, doing what nature forces them to do,(), hence the name love bugs.

Re: Love bugs

Its definitely the end of September when they peak. In 2006 they were awful in Epcot, totally covering the benches at the busstop. It was annoying, but not a vacation ruiner.
