For nostalgia fans...

Last Sep my DW and I did the 'Behind The Seeds' tour at EPCOT (incidentally, very interesting and informative).

As we were taken out behind "The Land" main building, my DW, Rona, suddenly yelped and pointed out the vehicle snapped below - one of the subs from 20,000 Leagues...! It seemed so out of place and forlorn, sitting there among some junk in the parking lot/work yard. The CM doing the tour had no idea what it was doing there...

Anyway, for all you nostalgia fans, and youngsters who may have missed it...

It was nice to see something from the past. I remember that ride very fondly.

Does anyone know why they took that ride down in the first place? That was always one of my favorites.

At first it started very small as most dreams do.
A twinkle in an eye, the thrill of something new.
But then the dream began to grow and come alive.
Touching every one of us, lighting up the sky.
We share a magic day, we share enchanted nights
It's a neverending story and together we all find
It's been a part of me, it's been a part of you.
A part of growing up together
Sharing a dream come true.

How cool is that? As soon as my computer is back up, I will scan one I have of the ride in action. Just take into consideration the level of technology as far as photography when you see it! ;)

If I remember correctly age and use had caused some structual issues with the ride and the repairs were going to cost significantly more then the ride cost when it was built.

It is a shame, it was one of my favorite Jules Verne books and I was only able to ride it once on my first visit to WDW. When I took my daughter the following winter the ride was already closed:nooo: .

You're right. It IS a shame. 20,000 Leagues has always been one of my husband's favorite stories, and he never got to try the ride at all, since he never went to Disney World until after we were married. Every time we walk by the site where the ride used to be, I get a sick feeling in my stomach realizing all over again that it's gone.

What a weird place to see one of the subs! I have the whole ride on video. I remember my first time on it...it just all seemed so real to me. I expect that was a little Disney Magic. My 74 year old Mom was talking about her only trip to DW back in 1971 and said it was her favorite thing. The only thing I didn't like about it was how slow it loaded.

My only trip on it was in 93, on my first visit to WDW. I enjoyed it...perhaps just a wee bit disappointed that it wasn't more 'real'.

Anyway, I dug out an old album and scanned in the pic below...I grabbed it when no-one was looking coz I thought it would make an interesting shot. The red light is normal...not bad photography (for a change!).

:)

Thanks for the pic Cowboy Mickey! Very Interesting... I've always wanted to go on that ride since I was little but sadly they closed it before I ever had the chance . I always wondered what it looked like inside those subs!

Maybe they are prepping it for use in the giant tank at The Living Seas? How cool would it be to see that thing sitting on the bottom? :)

What a fantastic idea! That would be absolutely thrilling, and it would kind of make up for the ride itself being gone (but not quite).
