My Mission Space Experience
My husband, sister, and brother-in-law spent the first week of December at DW (my favorite time to go). We were there fore 6 days. And for the first 5 days, my sister and I debated whether we were "brave" enough to go on Mission Space (our husbands don't do "those kinds of rides"). We read all of the warnings and they made us even more nervous. We polled people as they got off the ride and some of them made us VERY nervous. In the end, we decided that we'd have to skip MS...maybe next time. However, on our LAST day, we had to leave the resort at 11:00 in order to catch our flight. Since we were staying at the Beach Club, we decided to take one more trip around Epcot. My sister and I finally got the nerve up to at least get in line for MS. The line was moving way too fast for me to feel comfortable (sometimes I need the slow lines on to "prepare" myself). At the last opportunity to "opt out", I did...my heart was racing too fast and I just didn't have enough info. about the ride. I've never gotten sick on any of the rides, but I do have to work my courage up to go on rides like The Tower of Terror and for some reason Splash Mountain (I don't like the part of the ride where you're going up and you know that you have to come down...even though the down part isn't really that bad it still gets me). Anyway, I ended up "opting out" at the very last moment leaving my sister (who said she would go with or without me) to ride it alone - well there were 2 other people with her. I waited for her to get off the ride and she said "it was nothing" (meaning she didn't understand what all of the warnings were about). So...I decided to go on it. I was pretty relaxed because I trust my sister and I knew if she said it wasn't bad, then it wasn't bad....It was FANTASTIC. I was the Engineer and was afraid that I wouldn't hear when it was my turn to "push my buttons". The takeoff was great...I was expecting it to be like the Rock'n'Roller Coaster take off, but it wasn't....it was more just a feeling of being pushed back in your seat a bit. I was VERY mindful to keep my eyes open and not to look away from the screen. Of course you don't want to look away from the screen because the visuals are so cool! There was only a slight "strange" feeling (perhaps a little disorientation) just after takeoff that lasted only about 2 seconds (probably the G forces kicking in). There wasn't ANY sense of spinning. I had been told by some of the people that were getting sick that the part they didn't like was when they had to avoid the meteor, but I found that to be a pretty gentle (smooth) maneuver around the meteor (nothing at all like body wars or star wars). After it was over, I was mad at myself for not having ridden it the entire time we were there. Like I said, I don't get sick on rides (other than anxiety waiting in line
) so I don't know if people that are prone to motion sickness might have a different experience. Like I said, I did not close my eyes (but I didn't have any desire to do so....I am an "eye closer" on Tower of Terror and Splash ) and I didn't look anywhere but at my screen. Plus, since you have things you need to do, you have to listen to make sure you don't miss your duties, so that helps relieve the anxiety. Next December, it will be one of my FIRST rides!Disniac

I have been trying to get a in depth review of this attraction and am grateful that you posted one. My DD is a little hesitant about trying this one out...I'm not in the least. I never get motion sickness and can't wait to try out this new attraction. I haven't told her any of the "warnings" because I don't want her to go through the anxiety you went though in line. She isn't prone to getting sick and should be fine. Thanks again for taking the time to explain this great newbie attraction....it sounds AWESOME! I can't wait to test this baby out.

Thanks for your report on the ride. I have ridden it 3 times and except for those prone to motion sickness I can't imagine why anyone would hesitate to try it! I took Dramamine for my motion sickness and all was well. Sounds like you had a wonderful experience.:D

It is a really great ride, extremely well done. Near the end of the ride (before you land on Mars), everyone has to grab their joy stick and help maneuver through a narrow canyon. Again, this is a smooth maneuver. I'm trying to convince my husband that he could ride on it (he doesn't do well on Star Wars or Body Wars). I would never try to talk someone into riding on something if I didn't think they would like it (I hate when people do that to me). Enjoy the ride!

This ride just baffles me. It seems to affect people so differently. We rode it and I was very nervous too because of all the warnings and things I'd read about the ride. I was especially nervous about DD's riding it. We loved it. No one had any problems and I didn't get what all the hype was over. At the same time, I know people get queasy or sick. I've even read where some people who have not enjoyed the ride are people who aren't usually bothered by motion. Like I said, this ride baffles me!

OK, I'm stumped. I know what EPCOT stood for when Walt proposed it. I remember some of the CM jokes that have been applied to the acronym since then like, Every Parent Comes Out Tired and Evil Polyester Costumes Of Terror but what, pray tell, is a DD?

My experience:
First thing to note is that I don't NORMALLY get motion-sick, but I can't ride in a car's back seat or I'll start to feel queasy. Driving or in the front passenger seat is fine. I was really nervous at first. The CONSTANT warnings (geeze, 10 times at least it seemed like) about motion sickness kinda got me freaked. The queue area was different than I had expected... smaller, but still pretty cool. We flew through it though because of the short lines. Disney never seems to give you enough space in the first pre-show areas. I'm sorry, but I'm not standing on that little "1" circle thingy because I'll be right next to the rather large woman in front of me. :) Other than that, the pre-show was good. The 2nd pre-show area, right outside the ride, were better. I liked the fact that it shined a spotlight on you when your crew position was announced. More warnings. Ugh. Climbing into the simulator was easy, although not everyone is bright enough to follow the little line on the floor and 3 extra people tried climbing in ours! This is when I noticed the "air-sickness" bags and got a bit more nervous. The console closing in on your REALLY gives you a sense of "I'm not getting out of this now! At 6' exactly, my head was just a tad bit too high to see all of the screen... which is a disappointment. That being said, it still was fine. Plus, the average height of an adult is somewhere around 5' 4", so I can understand why they built it that way. A quick glance around gets you familiar with the 2 buttons you'll have to press, and the addition of the extra switches and buttons you can fool with is very nice. As for the ride itself... WOW! I got a bit sick at the very beginning during the launch, but I think it was more nerves since the 2nd time through it wasn't nearly as bad. Once past that I was fine for the rest of the trip. It certainly helps to keep yourself focused forward like the instructions say, and the cold air blowing on your face helps a lot. 1st time through I was the Engineer, 2nd time I was the navigator. I performed my "duties" flawlessly, but a couple people in our pod didn't hit their buttons in time. It IS hard, especially if you're not used to the added g-forces. Both my wife and I REALLY enjoyed it and will go on it over and over again. Didn't get sick, didn't see anyone else get sick.
