When I retire...

We were having the conversation (as many of us 40-somethings probably do) about where to retire, and so of course, I want to go to Orlando and get a townhouse by WDW. Do you think it would be possible to show up, 59 years old, at the casting center and say, "Hello! I'd like to be a gardener at Epcot!" (or a baker on Main Street, or a light tech at Indiana Jones, or even an elephant poop-scooper at Animal Kingdom....) and get a job? Do they hire like that? I would love to have a WDW job!!!

My Dad has a friend who did JUST that. He and his wife went to FL all the time in an RV then bought a house a year or so before he retired from teaching. And now he works at WDW in security.

I have family who work there in managment for MK, and I know a little about this. I don't think you can really go and request a specific job (unless you have special qualifications like electircian, etc), but from what I understand, you are asked preferences and if they have anything that fits, they do what they can. Most of the time, if you are hired as a basic CM with no expertise in a particular field you get sent where they need you.

I have known that WDW was where I wanted to retire since my very first visit there when I was 11 years old. The cool thing is that I'm in the Air Force, so I will be able to retire at the ripe old age of 43. I will have plenty of time to make WDW a second career. I can't wait, only 14 years to go...:)

First I would like to thank everyone for the smile on my face at this moment. I have two natural children and have had at least five others on and off for twenty five years. I have one left at home and shes 15. I keep thinking there's a light at the end of the tunnel. And moving to WDW when there all done with college sounds wonderful. Tina:love:

DisneyHog, you are such a baby at only 29 years old! I am 43 NOW! Why, oh why, didn't I choose the air force when I was young? I'd be happily gardening at the France Pavilion right now! Anyway, I once saw a crew of gardeners working on the Belle topiary at France, and the way they do it is to take a little sprig of ivy from a tray, and pin it into a little bare spot with a hair pin! The gardeners took a few minutes to come over to us and show us how they work, and I have thought about it ever since... My husband would PAY DISNEY to let him work in the pro shop at Osprey Ridge/Eagle Pines...

Wouldn't it be cool if all the DC members ended up retired down there, and we'd spend our "golden years" just the way we like it, smack dab in the middle of WDW. And one other bonus -- our grandkids would want to spend every vacation with their cool Disney grandparents..:D

DH's dream is to move to Florida someday. Infact, when you metioned 59 years "young" that is not that far down the road for us. Everytime we enter one of the parks, I always tell my DH, " I would just love to be a "greeter" at any of the parks".... I know I could do that, and if I have to say so myself, I would do a great job. We can always wish, and just maybe this dream might come true!!!!:) JOANN

I would love to work at Disney, but I fear that I would lose some of the magic I feel when I go there.

I know this isn't "retirement" but my DD who hasn't even been to WDW yet has started telling me when she grows up she's going to move there and work as a singer or whatever else, chef, whatever mood she is in to be that day. She's not waiting for retirement. BTW she's only 5. :laugh :D

Yea, maybe, but I'm gonna be 30 in May...:( No matter, really, I guess. It's only as old as you feel, right? I only feel about 25, but I have the mentality of a 7 year old, so you do the math...;) I just wish I had joined the AF right out of high school at 18, if I had done that, then I could retire at the age of 38. That's ok, 43 is still a young age to retire. So what's stopping you guys MissDisney? I know that the pay isn't always the best at WDW, that is why I have to wait untiil I retire from the AF and have that to supplement my income. Is that the deal with you guys?

mickaholic, I know what you mean, I've heard that before. My mother-in-law is a manager in MK, and she hasn't lost the magic. She gets to walk along with SpectroMagic every night, and she says it's just as incredible as when she used to be a spectator of the parade. I think it's all in your outlook. You have to understand in your head that there are always gonna be people behind the scenes that just don't have the same love for Disney as we do, and may not act very "Disney" like, but we just can't let that effect Disney for us. My mother-in-law has done it. I think I will be able to also.

Joann, I hope to be greeted at the gates of MK by you someday in the future. GO FOR IT!!! :)

cahogbin, that's very cool. Getting your DD addicted to WDW early, nice job.
:D

I seemed to have noticed many more seniors (over 60) working many rides, booths etc. this trip.

Also, I saw a local news piece that reported the part-time workers union (totalling about 6,200) had just struck a new deal with WDW for improved benefits for part-time employees.

Personally - I think I'd opt for the lower-stress jobs. Can't say I'd mind sweeping up trash and meeting folks. Not so sure I'd want to work Tower of Terror!
