No, Spaceship Earth is alive and well and is not closed. What your friend might have been referring to is the AT&T Global Neighborhood area at the end of the attraction. Although I've not checked it out myself, I've heard that the Global Neighborhood is gone and the area has big construction barriers in the center of the room. All the exhibits in the walls are reportedly gone and the windows are boarded up. This no doubt is because AT&T has dropped its sponsorship of the attraction.

Good golly, no way! It just CAN'T be closed, because my kids have been waiting "a billion years" to ride it, and we leave in less than two weeks to do just that!:nooo:

I have heard numerous rumors that Spaceship Earth is going to be going under some revamping soon. Is this true and if so does anyone know what it is going to be changed to?

well they were talking about replacing it with time racers a high speed attraction however spaceship earth has some structrual support that comes from the track of the ride as I understand it so they revamped time racers into a post show attraction that I have been told is far from a e ride attraction and are putting it where the global community was, the rummors I have heard is it will be open around the begining of the year.

The funny thing about the ATT area is that on our first day at EPCOT, it was there, as normal, fully functional. When we returned to SSE 6 days later, it was all gone, nothing left but the walls and a construction area walled up in the middle of the room. The announcement about visiting the area was gone from the ride as well.
It wouldn't surprise me if the rumors were indeed true, and as a new sponsor is brought on, changes were made to the ride. What Park Hopper is talking about may only be a preview of the upcoming ride.

I may be the most non observant person, but up until a few years ago I never even knew that it was a ride! lol. I thought you just walked through. I always wondered why there was a long line outside this big ball, when you could just walk around it.

As for the rumours re: SSE, part of project Gemini (an overhaul of Epcot - the twins are Future World and World Showcase) included an re-imagineering of SSE to an attraction called Time Racers.
The thought was to "thrill up" SSE into a rollercoaster attraction, however, the Imagineering team has run into challenges. Most important of which is the structural integrity of the Geosphere. Apparently, the ride track is a integral component of the structure. This means that if the track were removed and replaced with a rollercoaster, there would have to be serious work done inside to maintain integrity. The reports are that the costs are prohibitive. So it appears that the cat got out of the bag too early on this one. It's important to note that somewhere between 1 in 10 and 1 in 30 Imagineering projects ever sees life (depends on source). I wouldn't count on an overhaul in the foreseeable future.

SE isn't closed from what I can tell, no refurbishments or anything.
I'm Surprised the global network is being taken out? AT&T is a big sponsor for Disney, so whats up with that. Eisner and Gates did recently established a relationship between the two companies so that can establish Microsoft as being a new sponsor. I have not heard any rumors about replacing SE. I do see the direction that they are taking with Epcot and it worries me they may ruin it. Slowly Epcot has been adding thrill rides, Test Track, now Mission space. The next attraction that they are going to open is Soaring over the golden state, a copy of the DCA attraction. Although why a california ride in Fla is beyond me. I wouldn't be surprised if they did add more thrill rides. In my opinion though, add more to the world showcase, another location wouldn't be bad would it??

There's quite a list of potential refurbs associated with Gemini - the new Soaring attraction is one of them. And given the reception at DCA, I'm really looking forward to it.
There's been some talks about new World Showcase pavillions - Spain is at the top of the list, or so I've heard. I would really, really like to see an update to O Canada! Holy 80's hairdos! And the new movie would have to be a better blend of what Canada really is...I mean "A stone's throw away from any Canadian city is beautiful wilderness."??? I live in Toronto, the 4th largest city in North America. The wilderness is 100 miles away, and that's conservative. And don't get me going on the trading post...
