Great Movie Ride question

Are there plans for the Great Movie Ride (in the Chinese Theater at MGM) to close and be replaced? I sure hope not... we always ride twice: once to get the cowboy version and another to get the gangster version.

Earlier in the year,TGMR underwent a renovation. I haven't heard any recent rumours about TGMR being closed.

It was closed for renovations for about 5 months last year (Feb-June, I think)

I haven't heard of any upcoming closures.

We like this ride, too.

To keep an eye on all upcoming rehabs and closures, go to:

Cowboy version and Gangster version??? We went on it in 1997 and don't remember any variations. Of course, we only rode it once :D

I can't remember cowboys or gangsters... must be a senior moment!!! All I remember is that alien scaring the :devil out of me!!!

So what's the deal with the cowboys and gangsters?

The little skit with the driver has him chased away by either a gangster or cowboy.

When you go into the ride, you will be seated in one of two cars.. once they begin the ride itself, you will either be hijacked by a James Cagney-style "gangster" or a Wild West cowboy... both have lots of gunfire, etc... I think the front car is the cowboy car, but I can't be sure. If you ride it a second time, just ask the CM to seat you on the car you were not on before so you can see the other version...

Several years ago rumors were going around that the GMR was going to be replaced, but nothing ever came of it. Since it did go through such an extensive, 5 month rehab, I'd be willing to bet that it will be around for a while.

As far as the two versions, the cowboy, and the gangster, which is your favorite? The bank explosion and the fire is cool in the cowboy version, but I like the car speeding off in the gangster version. I'd have to call it a tie. :)

I'd give the gangster version a slight edge, but that's probably just because all the CM gangsters we've had have really been into their roles -- more so than the cowboys.

It does make a big difference if you get a CM that is really into their role. I've had a few that seemed like they were on the verge of falling asleep, which kinda made all of us on the ride want to do the same. When you do get one of those great CM'sm what a fun ride GMR is. :)

I like the gangster version....But then that could be because of the girl that was in it

We went on TGMR last week so my 7 yr old could go through the cowboy version since we did the gangster last summer. The front car which loads from the line to the right when entering the building is the cowboy. The CMs called it the A version.

I like the ganster version better, but I guess I'm not that fond of Westerns anyway! The gansters seem more believable when they act like they don't know what's going on with the ride and Aliens and all that. Or maybe it's just my fondness for Classic Star Trek w/ it's "A Piece of The Action" episode. :)

I heard somewhere that the airplane front (movie prop?) in the GMR where Bogart is talking to Bergman is the same one that was used in the movie! Has anyone ever heard this too? :D :) Joe

I have heard that too... And I have heard, also, that the plastic flowers and vines in the Wizard of Oz diorama are also original to the movie.

I can't believe this - We have been on TGMR probably 30 times through the years. I have NEVER been on the so-called "ganster" version. I didn't even know there was such as animal. Wow.
