MK decision...
If I am staying off-property, but wish to get to MK as early as possible, what are my options? I will have a car. If I could get all the way into the main lot instead of having to park at the TTC, that would be terrific.

Try planning on having an early breakfast at the Polynesian (Kona). I was there back in 1995 and we drove through the campgrounds directly to the Polynesian parking lot. We also found it easier to leave that way.

The TTC is the main lot for the MK. If you are dining at the Poly, you will be given a 3 hour parking pass. Better to park at the TTC and walk over to the Poly. Of course, stopping for breakfast at the Poly would defeat your goal of getting to the MK as early as possible. The gates won't open til 9am anyway as they have an opening ceremony in the train station.

If you are an AAA member then there is a special discount lot you can use which is very close to the TTC. Just mention that you are AAA as you enter the park.

But isn't there another lot right by the Main Gate? Where you park in a section named after a character, and then ride a little tram to the entrance? That's where I'd like to be, if possible... I thought the TTC was way out by the ferry/monorail stop...

The MK is different than the other parks. The ONLY parking lot (which is as you described) is on the other side of the lake, and is a.k.a. the TTC. It is from there (where the tram from the parking lot leaves you off) that you can take the monorail or boat to the MK (or buses/monorail to other desitnations).
If you park at a resort on the monorail loop. as stated, although you'll be closer you can't STAY parked there. The monorails etc. run about an hour before the parks open. So drive in 2 hours to 1 1/2 early, and just head over to the MK then. You'll be there in time for the rope drop! :) If you want to get a good parking space but don't want to wait THAT long for the park, drop into the snack shop at the Poly (or Kona Cafe) or whatever the GF has for breakfast as the monorial loop runs TTC, Poly, GF, MK, Contemp, TTC -- so you'll be closer to the MK.

The lot with the character names is at the TTC, which is the monorail/ferry depot.
Other than parking at the hotels (which is pretty regulated), you must park at the TTC and take a monorail or ferry. You can also take the monorail to Epcot from the TTC. The other 3 parks (Epcot, MGM and AK) all feature lots right at the park entrance.
