What might happen to 20,000 Leagues?

From MousePlanet.com, here are some rumors on what might happen to the old 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Ride space:

"…The latest rumor that I've heard regarding the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea lagoon is that it will be filled in to become a new Meet-and-Greet area as an extension of Toon Town, of all things. No word on whether it will be a new entryway to the land. An alternate rumor indicates a Hundred-Acre Wood Meet-and-Greet. It may undergo a further rehab to house a new E-ticket ride within a few years. Bear in mind that this is only at rumor stage now, and may have no basis in fact."

All this sounds interesting... I just wish they would come up with something to do with this space instead of leaving it open there with that murky water just sitting there. Imagineers come up with something for this space... Please. Aside from the fact that when we were there in Oct. and the Pooh characters were there during MNSSHP for a meet and greet, I have to tell you that it didn't smell too good. It really needs to be drained. I think that would help. Any one of these ideas would be better than what it is now, a sad reminder of what it used to be for those of us who remember. I actually liked that ride, and I kinda miss that big fake octopus. I knew it was fake when I was seven, but it was still cool.

I couldn't agree with you more. I do wish they would do something with that space. It makes me miss that much loved attraction from my very first trip to WDW.:)

Well said Dana WELL SAID! When I came down over my break, as soon as I walked into Fantasyland I couldn't find everyone's favorite submarine ride where the giant squid comes a knockin! I was speechless! Grant it, it's been 11 years since I've been, but still! Oh well, surely somethin pretty boss will get goin on there. That lagoon is pretty big amount of space.

Unfortunately guys they cant do anything with that piece of land no matter what!!!
Ah Matt you won't know what I'm talking about since you're gonna be goofy, but when you go to costuming in MK, take a peek in the guys locker room, if you notice the drips in the ceiling thats from the 20,000 leagues lagoon. Its built above the guys locker room!

Anyways filling up that space would cause it to cave into the tunnels. I'm only going on what my managers and supervisors have said. I never got to ride the ride and I wish I had, the "submarines" are still sitting out backstage along with some of the old space mountain rockets. Its just funny how much nostalgia is backstage!

Why don't they empty the lagoon? If it leaks into the underground tunnel system, wouldn't that solve part of the problem.

I remember the old SPAMO cars, the used to seat two people per car. I had to sit on my Mom's lap to ride, and the buckle went across both of us. I noticed that the cars were different when we went in Oct. 2003, it had been 20 years since my last visit and my DD had one seat and I had another. What a difference 2 decades makes.

THere was talk of draining the lagoon, but something about the structural integrity was holding due to the water?
I don't know but it made me feel as though the thing would implode is the water was drained.
I'm not too sure how it was built but it seems to need the water to remain in it. I think if thats the case then the little mermaid could definately use a ride of her own!

I know what you mean, but "it's a small world" after all.
But I guess all of our "wishes" cant come true.
If they could bring 20,000 leagues back wouldn't it be "fantasmic"?
You know it's not really gone though, all you have to do is close your eyes and it's there! Just take a "journey into your imagination"!
Are you done Fred??
Yes I am! Boy see what happens when it's late!?!?!

Seriously though if you think about it, 20,000 leagues would have been better off if it was in tommorowland, since it goes along with the redesign. I can see why, since it's in fantasyland that they haven't opened it back up. I miss the sky way too! They said that cost too much to operate and maintain, now thats something I really miss to be honest!

At this point, they could put in a Nemo ride! That would fit with the Fantasyland theme, and I think Nemo is a popular enough and enduring enough movie to merit a ride. I know there's that Nemo thing at The Living Seas, but unless they've done something with it since Dec, it wasn't much of anything! Some really fake fish statues out front, and then pictures of the Nemo characters by the tanks where the real fish are e.g. clown fish, ray, that kind of thing. My vote was for a slightly larger than life size (but not big) animatronic Nemo and Dory etc. to occasionally swim by in the tank you see from the Coral Reef restaurant. I think THAT would be very cool. (We've seen people diving, but never Mickey. I'd LOVE to have seen Nemo come by every twenty minutes or so -- so it was surprising and unexpected.) Without more Nemo at Epcot, there wouldn't be any contradicition in making a Nemo ride at MK. I read somewhere about the 20,000 lake being connected to the lake by the castle being connected to The Jungel Cruise -- I guess that was at WDW rather than Disneyland. So they could not drain 20,000 because it would affect the other water. Maybe that isn't true after all?? Anyway, an under the sea Nemo ride would be so perfect! :)

Amneris,
I like both your ideas for Nemo. Especially at the Living Seas.
But something needs to be done with 20,000 Leagues.

I remember the Skyway too. I sure do miss it.

Nemo would be a great replacement for 20k...right now it is a little bit of blight in Fantasyland.

(I had a chance to ride 20k when I was a little kid but chickened out. Boy did I miss out :( )

If they did Nemo would it have Bruce?

I had the chance to ride the ride when my DH and I were there on our honeymoon. I didn't like it. I don't like to be in "close" spaces and I felt like a sardine in a can! I felt so overwhelmed with everyone's deodorants, perfumes, etc....that I don't remember a thing about the ride itself. I just kept thinking to myself, "is it almost over?", " I want out of here!". For the reasons mentioned above, I know already that Mission Space is not for me!

I rode that ride when I was younger by myself, because my mother had a little claustrophobia problem, too. I enjoyed it. I remember it well. I would also enjoy seeing the space used, and I think a Nemo or Mermaid themed ride would be a really good use of the space. Where is an Imagineer when you need one?

I also miss the SkyWay. I loved riding it every time we went to Disney. Back and forth from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland to Tomorrowland. You could wave at the people below you and they would wave back. It was so cool. I really hate to see those buildings not being used anymore, especially the one in Fantasyland that looks so much like a Swiss Cabin. It is so cool. I wish they could come up with a use for it. Turn it into a shop or something, just don't let it sit there empty. I hate that.
